Just thought I would start a thread with a specific subject.... 
Just to clarify some info...
Pre Dared MC-7P
In the 12AX7 position, the use of 12AT7 (-30% gain) would be to lower noise and require the amp to work a bit harder? And that would be good in this pre that is runs with Klipsch @ 102 dB sesitivity and a amp that can easily push 450 RMS?
Just tring to understand some basics....

They are not that interchangeable. There are some differences in the voltages and heater currents that could adversely affect the amp. The mu factor is not the only difference that needs to be considered. There are more similar electrical substitutes (though some sites claim the 12at7 is OK). Who stated you can run 12AT7's? If it wasn't the manufacturer of the gear I wouldn't do it. If you are looking for a lower gain compatible tube you can use 5751's, but the really good ones are pricey.
Do you have the pre-amp yet? Have you even run it in your system to verify it has too much gain. Now if Dared says you can run 12AT7's you might be alright. If you need a contact at Dared let me know. Did you buy your pre from Joe Zhou in Naperville, the US dealer? If so, he's a great guy that should be able to help you decide if the 12AT7's can be used in the 12AX7 position. Normally they aren't compatible.

The 5751 is electrically equivalant to the 12ax7 and has 30% less gain. That won't make your amp work harder, it will simply give you less gain out of the preamp, so only the preamp will work harder. The amp will continue to amplify whatever comes in.
What I'd suggest you look at is something like a single ended triode amp. Those are typically in the 8-12 watt range (but can be as low as 1-2 watts), which is probably plenty for your 102 db watt/meter speakers.Turntable: Empire 208

Sorry about that post.... I was mistaken about what I was thinking :redface:
I was in tube overload combined with beers... wasn't a good match! I got on that thought process from another thread, again more confusion on my part. I just checked and I ordered the correct 12AX7's for the 12AX7 position.HRDROKN

The pre should be here Thursday and I believe that it's coming from JPZ imports?
When I get it I plan not to change a thing until I get familiar with the sound as it comes... unless it totally sounds like a$$! After I get some time on her, I'll then do one change at a time.HRDROKN
