I just got back from this years event (my first time participating). The bicycle run was 120 Km on Saturday (strong headwinds all day long) and 100 Km on Sunday (today, perfect day).

2200 riders raised 6.7 million dollars for cancer research at this event alone!

I also reached my personal best of 28 kph average for the day and I hadn't touched my bike for 2 weeks due to an injury!

This is similar to the Winners Walk of Hope which happens across the country every year. We have been providing them with free PA during their Ottawa event since 2006 if I can recall. I actually got the request last week and it has been approved again this year.

Good on you, man... I participate in the Relay for Life here every year. Another forum I belong to sponsors an event called "Screw cancer, ride bikes", which sounds similar to what you're doing. Maybe we could get some Polk American Cancer Society sponsorship? I wouldn't want it to cut into our other great charity sponsorship, though.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Nice! My wife and I just got back from driving the support vehicle for my family as they rode the STP (Seattle to Portland) over the last two days; 206 miles, 10,000 riders, and a bunch of money raise for charity!

Thank you guys for your wonderful replies. Although I don't have any close friends or relatives with cancer, I managed to raise $2,650 towards the cause. My motivation came from last years' event where I greeted a friend arriving at the finish line and witnessed their personal achievements and emotions first hand.

Getting into this sport was a larger investment than I had anticipated when you tally up the bike and all the associated equipment...but it was well worth it and I am glad to have been able to contribute to this worthy cause.

I AM a new cyclist also. I trained at home during the winter (hooked my bike up to spinner) and did a few rides in the spring and summer. So yes, you can DO IT!
