Deciphering the New Software Formats (Polk Paul)

I thought this article in the latest Speaker Specialist was a good one. It gave a good overview of the competing technologies and their current status. I particularly agree with Paul's statement that the multi-channel aspect of the formats, not the high resolution, will make the product succeed. Was SACD originally intended to have multi-channel capability? It seemed like they added that later to compete with DVD-A and have a more mass-market appeal (rather than appealing to just high end stereo listeners). One aspect of the formats that the article unfortunately didn't cover was watermarking. I really haven't read up on this, but I know that it has been a pretty hot topic with DVD-A. I don't think it is used on SACD, however. Does anyone know anything about this?
An interesting aside to this article happened when I came home for Thanksgiving. My dad says to me that he got this CD in the mail and it wouldn't play on his CD player. He handed it to me, I looked at it, and then started laughing. Yep, it was a SACD.
