Any of you know what a Pioneer SX-3900 (120 w x 2) receiver would be worth?
Also the price of a decent set of Large Advents?
Some stuff nearby, thinking of possibly setting up a garage system with these if I can get a 'good' price!
Many thanks.

Which Large Advents? The originals or the Legacy's?

Pretty sure they are originals? Walnut cabs, light colored mesh grills, 12" woofers with a kind of hybrid paper cone/dome tweeter?

Sx-3900's sell on ebay for around $100 + shipping, the are underrated, but great receivers of the Fluroscan series, TOTL IIRC, depends on what shape it's in 'natch, Large Advents are everywhere, CL, garage sales, and if your lucky cheap at a thrift store, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a good pair.
If you can get the package under $200, you'll be happy with the sound and look, I'm a vintage Marantz guy, but those SX-xx00 Pio's with the digital readouts (they're really analog tuners) are nice units!
You really should look for 2 pairs of the Advents and stack'mThorens TD125MKII, SME3009,Shure V15/ Teac V-8000S, Denon DN-790R cass, Teac 3340 RtR decks, Onix CD2...Sumo Electra Plus pre>SAE A1001 amp>Martin Logan Summit's -
Thanks!
The Advents I can get for a 100 or less. The Pioneer has a 200 dollar tag which I thought was too high but is negotiable (two different sellers within driving distance--so pick up is the ticket).

If the Advents are walnut with a bullnose $100 is still a good price. You can always get your money back should you sell them.

$200 is too much for the Pioneer IMO. You can get some great vintage receivers for $200.

The price of the Advents depends largely on the model. The utility cabinet model will bring much less than the walnut with the bull nose or angled front trim. If the surrounds are rotten you will have to buy a good refoam kit for just under $30. I would give about $0 for a utility model simply because I like the other model. If it's an all walnut with one of the trims I mentioned and in good shape I would give $150. Scratches on the walnut finish are not a problem but crushed corners are. They can be repaired but it's not an easy job. New grille cloth (if you need it) that matches the original is almost impossible to find. You should think about putting new capacitors in the crossovers.........cost less than $10-15. There are several people on the "Classic Speaker Forum" that know Advents inside out and they are very happy to help. Good luck and I'd offer $200 for the speakers and Pioneer.TO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE.

Thanks guys.
The Advents are Walnut cabs in decent shape, say 8/10 on the audiogon scale. Foam surrounds on the woofers were redone two years ago so we're good there. As for capacitors/crossovers...don't know there but as mentioned, that can be refurbed. Got 'em for 100 which I'm happy with.
The Pioneer is a nice piece that will come in with a good price. I think some of you are thinking about the SX-3700 two models down which regularly sells on ebay for 100 or less. My research shows no 3900 selling on ebay for as low as 100. 120-150 is the range there, and even higher for refurbed units (over 200). This was top of the line, made in Japan, of the SX fluoroscan series in 1980 when it retailed for $800 and weighed in at over 44 lbs. Certainly no SX-1980 but nothing to sneeze at either. Big Toroidal transformer and 15K caps, etc. Very quiet/capable phono section and good FM selectivity. But, I do agree 200 is too much. Still negotiating but our price is below 200 and approaching an acceptable point.
Should make a great little outdoor system that can really pound. That Pioneer is rated at 120 watts X 2 RMS with .005 THD and can drive the 4 ohmers too. Certainly a respectable offering from Pioneer for that time period. And the unit is in near mint condition. The owner is a Pioneer aficionado who has a couple of models even higher on the food chain.
With reference to our own, I'd say this guy is the mhardy of Vintage Pioneer.

I sold my SX-3900 for 250.00 and then mailed it off for 60.00 I think.(6-31-2010) total=310.00. It was perfect but not refurbished.
But I sold my sx-1250 for 160.00 in a package deal. It was sooooo filthy I hated to touch it. It worked but needed cleaning in alot of pots. I know it was a steal for him but he bought alot and traveled aloooong way to come here for just the other stuff he bought , not knowing I had that also. I cut him a BIG break!!!Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
