My "in-laws" will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this Sept and I am looking for low cost ideas for the party/event. This will be an outdoor event in Sept.. which should be decent enough weather.

What things have you seen or been a part of that made a couples 50th anniv memorable?

Taking the couple sky diving it out..

they aren't THAT adventeurous (sp)..

food will be catered some kind of pit bbq pig thing  lots of adult beverages. I'm not looking for gift ideas.. looking for those "special moments" kind of ideas.

I know a lot of you all have parents or grandparents who've celebrated their 50th already.. toss me some ideas please.

    It's cheap too!

and yes, that was biting sarcasm.

What my mom did for my grandparents 50th anniversary was make a photo album of pictures from every anniversary they had for the last 50 years. She'd also been working on a family tree and she gave them a 40" by 22" poster of the entire family tree.

Wasn't very expensive but wasn't cheap either. Lotsa time involved and duplicate prints at the Fotomat as well. But a way better idea than anything she could find in a store. Might not be so feasible for other folks though. But you asked for ideas so I'm answering the question and that's the idea my mom had.

Dunno what I'd do for my parents 50th.

Have some friends they haven't seen in a long time attend the festivities.

The photo ideas are great and should be a keepsake for them. If the money is right and you can swing it, perhaps you could entertain the thought of sending them on a short cruise as well.

If not, then as mentioned family photos are always a nice treat.

For my parents 50th we had a nice party at their house and contacted people who they had not seen for years. They woke up to 50 pink flamingos on their front yard. As a gift I had an artist do a water color picture of the house of the I and my siblings grew up in.

    It was a nice day.

For my Grandparents 50th we had all the grandkids, great-grandkids, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, aunt's, uncle's ect. all put to together a book that listed all of our best times spent with them (hand written).
Each had their own story and page in the book.
My grandmother loves that book to this day (she is 88).
My grandfather pasted @ around their 61th anniversary, but they both read the book frequently.
You could tell it meant alot to them!

Yeah! Similar to Pepster, my wife and I contacted her parent's friends and extended family. We mailed them fancy construction paper and asked them to write about their favorite experiences and include any photos they might have. We compiled these pages into a scrap book in the best chronological order we could. They absolutely loved it! The total outlay was a couple hundred dollars for materials and fedex, and it was done over about a years time, so the money was spent a little at a time.

We rented a tent, and asked everyone to bring something potluck style. The food was way better than any catered roast beef or cornish game hens! For desert we had a local bakery reproduce their wedding cake from photos.

If you are good with computer and photos, you can create a slideshow with nice background music (preferably some of their favorite romantic music that match the era of the photo) for them of their 50 years history together. If you can afford to do so, you can project the slideshow on a big screen during the outdoor dinner using some like 5-10 sec delay. You make sure to burn on DVD for them and present it to them around the time they get their gift from everyone elses.

We had some of the sort (family tree on slideshow) few years back during our family Xmas gather and everyone love it.

Al, I think you guys should make a heartfelt speech about how much their 50 years together has inspired your own relationship. That would be about the best thing you could give them.

Have one of the ladies from Tijuana bring her donkey up to perform their act. Can be a real crowd pleaser! JK. Hire a band to play "their song" and record them dancing to it.

Similar to this, I made of list of "Favorite Memories" and gave to my dad during his final months. We had a great time remembering past events, etc. and he showed it everyone who came to visit.

I love the idea of having so many family members involved. Also love the idea of doing while they can still enjoy it for years to come.

When we did Mom & Dad's 50th, we rented a local Hotel wedding reception room, complete with bar, dj all that stuff. They were most excited seeing all the OLD friends they had know idea we had contacted--friends from high school days, my Mom got a kick out of that, and I'm glad we were able to find as many as we did.

We also took them down to Lake of the Ozarks, rented one of the lodge homes (all on our dime of course) as Mom & Dad love that place. They never could afford to rent the lodge home, so they thoroughly enoyed the whole event. Add to that, Mom loves to fish.

Neat, that can be combined with the visuals. People's testimonies of the specific era.
