Tannoy Gift

I was very excited to receive the Tannoys, I couldn't fit them in my house due to the size of the cabs. When I pulled the speakers out of the cabs, I got even more excited. Instead of the Silver 12's, I discovered that they're Silver 15's. I've attached pictures, you don't see these everyday.

The price for these is crazy, I love my stereo equipment but I don't think I could ever justify that much coin.

Congrats on the best gift to date as far as audio stuff might go.

    Do they sound that good?

    They must..
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

18 grand? Not likely in reality but they do sell for a decent amount. I'd keep them and build some cabinets based on vintage ideas.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I had these playing on 5 tube watts and they sounded better than any speaker I've ever heard. I'm looking into custom cabs, the cost is $1500-2000. For the money, I know I'll never have a better pair of speakers.

Cayuga, Silver 15's are like the be all end all of the Legacy Tannoy drivers. Those are what my uncle had. They sounded just awe inspiring. Total immersion is the only words to describe them.

My lord I am green with envy.

One word though. TUBES. You will thank me later.

Sure, within the 2K bracket of loudspeakers you would be hard pressed to beat them.

Cayuga, Sorry I missed the part where you said you had them playing on tubes. I guess you know how good that is then.

dorokusai, are you talking about quality of sound at K? The crossovers alone sell for 2K, I'm not sure what you're saying.

I don't care if it's $4000 or $40,000, thats a lot of money for speakers that need cabs built to house them. I will tell you though, these speakers sing like no others I've listened to. You put these with a nice set of tubes and you're in music heaven.

I hate you! You lucky dog! With your luck your neighbor will be tossing a silver seven amp in the trash tonight because the power switch stopped working!

Nope. I'm sure they sound wonderful.

I'm just saying I'd take the 8k for the pair and move on. I don't have the knowledge or resources to properly size and build a cabinet for speakers like that. And, I could use the 8k more than I could use another pair of speakers...

nadams, I would normally agree but these speakers are very different from your run of the mill 8k speaker. They are the originator and as with all things they can be copied but never duplicated.

I'm in the same boat, they're very unique and a keeper. I'd start working at McDonald's for a few weeks to keep them....to a point. They're an investment type of driver, so be in for the long haul on them as the work and money you put into them will, for the most part, not be returned. It's the drivers that are the gold.

Did I really say run of the mill 8k speaker?

What to do what to do? These speakers sound great, it's a problem of cab cost and where to put them vs sell them and use the money for something else. As for the 8K, I think they will fetch more than that. The last pair on the Bay went for over 11K, I still can't believe I have them. Today it's good to be me (key word today).

I know I'm stuck on the money aspect... but at 8k, that's 1/4 of my yearly salary, tax free... at 11k, it'd be way more tempting yet.

Amazing gift you received there! Glad to hear they went to someone who is capable of fully enjoying them.

I have to ask, though, if they are the best speakers anyone can hear, and they are made with "only" 1950's technology - why isn't anyone making replicas? I'd think entrepreneurs would be all over that market!

Those drivers are similar to what Tannoy currently offers in their $25,000+ speakers.
