sub calibration

Up to this point I've relied on my Elite's MCACC to calibrate my speakers. The other day I picked up a SPL and decided to try and tweak them myself using pink noise generated by the mcacc.

I got my speaker levels up to about 75 dB's (the mcacc had them all set in the 68dB range...).

Then I got to the sub.... my AVR only allowed me to increase the sub channel by +10dBs before it cut off... but that was not enough to get the sub volume up to + or - 3 dBs of 75dB (which I had read is the optimal place to have the sub volume)... so I manually adjusted the volume knob on the sub.

It got to the point that it was completely loud and overbearing. So, I canceled out my settings and let the MCACC recalibrate.

I feel like a total rookie.

What am I doing wrong here?

The dial knob was just a tad below 1/2 way... That's where the MCACC wanted it (it kept telling me to turn it down before it would execute the auto calibration). So, when I used the spl meter, I started by adjust g the volume on the AVR settings... Which only allowed me to increase te subs volume by 10 dB's. The rest of the volume gain came from the volume knob on the sub.

    Thoughts?
