carver M-400a with SDA-2?

so i just picked up a carver m-400a on the cheap and am not sure if there is a way to hook it up to my sda-2s. the amp is bridgeable but one of the speaker outputs is inverted so there is actually continuity between the right channel + output and the left channel - . i was hoping i could invert the line level input to the right channel and then hook the right sda speaker backwards to the carver output so that the + speaker terminal actually connected to the - amps right channel output as this output is actually the "hot" output. sorry if this is worded awkwardly - currently typing from cell phone on my way home from vacation. wife agreed to drive for a bit :)

what do you guys think?

on the rest of the car ride home I realized that inverting the input signal to the right channel input of the amp would result in the grounding of that signal as whatever source the amp was hooked to would undoubtedly have a common ground between the right and left channels and the carver also has a common grounding point between the two RCA inputs. I'm thinking I may be stuck with an amp I can't use with my SDA's :frown:

Ahhh...the old Carver Cube. Clever design, in it's day.

Carver was the master of power supply tricks and games. Seems to me he inverted one channel's polarity, then reversed the markings on the output terminals so the signal was back in phase. Heavy bass notes (typically monophonic) would drain both sides of the power supply instead of just one; effectively making the power supply twice as large at low frequencies.

I'm no electrical engineer, but yeah, I think you're screwed.

No doubt you'll get better info from some others on this forum.

Revive this thread..Bump ?? Anyone out there care to answer ?? From what I can tell the M 400 is a common ground amp and can be used with the SDA 2b speaker with the interconnect..Yes..No ?? What about using two as Mono blocks one for the left SDA and one for the right..With the interconnect..Can this be done ? Please tell me, Thanks !

    Re-read previous reply.

One channel is inverted. Carver did this on several amplifier models. Having one channel inverted prevents common-grounding of the amplifier channels.

You can use that amplifier with the 2B, but you'll need an isolation transformer in the SDA interconnect cable. If the Carver Cube will tolerate the impedance of the 2B when bridged, you could use a pair of them--but you still must have the isolation transformer.

Search for "AI-1", "Dreadnaught", and "Dreadnought" (since I can't seem to spell it properly.)

It is possible that if your 2Bs are early-production, they may have blade/blade SDA interconnect sockets,. If that is the case you'll need to make some minor mods to the internal wiring, and replace the sockets.

  • Gavin take a look at the answer I posted to VSAT88's post about essentially the same issue, but with two of those amps.
I had this problem back in the 80's and Bob Carver himself helped me out.

    Good luck
