Well after my last tile job failed so poorly I decided this time I would contract a friend with experience to help me and he is doing a cool design...
He is going to alternate the center color with the outside color there..
Should be awesome!

That looks nice.....and expensive. How did you mess up previously?
-
Well -
Multiple ways - some my fault some not
One - the house is older and the joist are 2 ft apart - so alot of flex in the floor...
Two - we put the tile directly on the subfloor
Three - See two
So combine one and two.... you get tiles that pop right back off!! HAHAH - the most expensive, worst joke I have pulled on myself! lol
So - I reinforced the floor, sistered the joist that are there and put one in the center between them so there is a joist every one foot now and I added 5 jack post under the house. We then put down the concrete board you see there and now the floor feels like a slab...
Not to expensive - and my bud works for audio equipment so... not to bad- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I have a new room mate moving in in 3-4 weeks so I have been busting **** to raise funds and finish up the back end of the house...
By the end of July - kitchen, bathroom, hallway and spare bedroom will have floors down and basically completed.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
This reminds me of your plumbing exploits from a few years ago. The funniest thread I ever read on Polk.

Plumbing exploits??
It is a guy roomie - but a roomie that is paying a decent chunk of change to live here so I dont want him living in a construction zone... if that makes sense.
It also put a fire under my **** to get things rolling as I have put the house on the back burner or atleast slowed it down a bit for a while- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Didn't you have trouble with a washing machine or something in your basement a few years back. If not I'm getting senile.

I swear I'm not imagining this. You were living at home. This would have been 2005 or 2006. God help me if I dreamt this.

That would of been at my Moms house and I cant think of anything that happened there either...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Ceramics and flex don't mix ! Posts & Durock should do the trick for sure! Be sure to seal the grout, it really keeps it from getting stained. Remember when a glass dropped on the wood floor might just bounce, well, that's all in the past now! Enjoy!

Very cool design
My kness hurt from just contemplating tile work.
ScottWithout music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid. ..... Frank Zappa -
That is a pretty serious design....but cool looking. If you had previous problems with tiles popping up, I would also mud AND screw down the backer board to the sub floor....the tiles won't go anywhere!!!

Thanks guys!

I'd have added a layer of 5/8 or 3/4" plywood with glue and screws before the cement board. I know it makes the transitions a problem, but the final product is an extreemly rigid foundation for such an expensive tile job! The other option is a 1" thick mud bed. That is heavy work which is why I chose the plywood!Sources: Technics SL1200MKII | SME3009 Tonearm | Monster Alpha 1 MC cartridge | Oppo UDP203 disk player | Nikko NT-790 analog tuner | Musical Fidelity Trivista 21 DAC | Preamp: Threshold SL-10 | Amplifier: Threshold Stasis 2 | Speakers: Snell Acoustics C/V | Kimber 12-TC bi wire speakers | Analysis plus Oval 1 preamp to amp | Wireworld Eclipse 7 DAC to Preamp | Wireworld eclipse digital IC Oppo to DAC | Audioquest Quartz tuner to preamp |

This is older - below the cement board is 3/4 slat board, 3/4 plywood and 1/4 plywood + cement board...
Joist every 12 inches, the main joist sistered, jack posts, you name it - that floor aint goin ANYWHERE- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Ran into a snag as I ran out of some tile I acquired used - so we are going to introduce a third color into the final design... a darker brown - should flow nicely...
Here is kind of where it is at right now... lots of intricate cuts around that utility closet there...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
My buddy is offering to do a matching back splash too...
I have the best luck..

Thanks AB!
More than welcome to stop by!
Unfortunatel the outside has gone a little neglected outside...
However there is 400 ft of trench dug up in the yard that was just completed as far as digging goes this weekend. Going to look into gravel so put in there and can finally cover that back up - took over a year to do!
Did alot of projects at one time! lol- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

My buddy said at his old company it would be a 3,000 or so dollar job... so I am very fortunate indeed!
I might have... 500 or so in the floor when it is all said and done- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
the design seems large from the standpoint that it's a relatively small room, but might have to see the finished product to be sure......
The two tipes that are parallel to each other look like they have some serious gappage comparative to the rest of the grout lines.....are they all looking equal around all tiles?comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Yep - will be neat to see how it looks, no turning back now!
None of the tile is actually in place yet, just in place to make the next cut - something could have moved, etc etc -- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Pic update!
Should be grouted Monday or Tuesday night - sealed on Wednesday, back to having a kitchen on Thursday??
Also while he has been doing that I started on the rest of the house...
