Just pick up something from the big box store (BB, Wal-Mart, Fry's). Sounds like it's just a basic server type machine. So anything sub 500 should be ok. Dell Inspirion 620 should get the job done. If you have a copy of Windows 7 I would say build it.

I am running mine on a 4 year old Acer Aspire laptop, running Ubuntu 10.04 ...very responsive (but library is only 40 GB) ... is your current machine windows ? If so, maybe you could setup Ubuntu to replace it ...requires a smaller footprint, and will cost only your time..

The hardware requirements are relatively modest, I believe. But, I've also read that sufficient RAM is key. I recently put together a small server with a low-power Intel Atom processor and 2 GB of RAM. Installed Ubuntu and Squeezebox Server, and it's been running flawlessly.

Agreed. Building your own is always the best way so you can get better quality components for the same price as the pre-built at BB. Plus you learn how these things tick so if you have problems, theres a big chance you can fix it yourself instead of having to take it to somebody for $75/hour.

But there is nothing wrong with picking up one from BB, pre-built. For basic internet and email, any entry level compy will handle that but Id suggest spending a little more and getting one with more horsepower for some future proofing. Picking up one with the new Intel procs like the i5-2000 series will be enough grunt for you for a looooong time to come.

Not a fan of Emachines, but it should do the job. Congrats on the purchase.

I think you'll be fine! I believe most people get suckered into buying way more computer than they really need. For casual web surfing and SB, you now have more than enough, and you didn't break the bank. I know plenty of people with emachines and they've held up fine. I think I even bought one at one time.

Now the important part is getting your tunes back! How are you going to move stuff from old to new?
