When choosing a receiver does the WAF come into play?

Sure we can play with our audio gear but when your not home and the wife has to run it, does some of your buying decisions involve "ease of use"?

It has to with mine.......

What brands are good and easy to use?

I guess my wife just gets electronics. The remote with my Onkyo TX NR808 runs everyting. You hit the My TV button and the AVR, TV, and Dishnetwork all turn on with one push. It also selects the right hdmi input for the dishnetwork box. You hit all off and it turns everyting off.
    AVR: Onkyo Tx-NR808
    Amplifier: Carver A-753x 250 watts x 3
Fronts: Polk RTI A7 (modded by Trey VR3)
Center: CSI A4 (modded by Trey VR3)
    Rear: FXI A4
    Sub: Polk DSW Pro 660wi
    TV: LG Infinia 50PX950 3D
    Speaker Cable: AudioQuest Type 8
    IC: AudioQuest Black Mamba II

I must admit that my wife is a 'damper' on audio purchases. But when it comes to 'using' AVRs....regardless of how hard I try to explain the system she continues to rely on me or my 13 year old daughter to watch a Blu-ray or DVD with the constant refrain--why do you have to make viewing so complex.

Ok, how complex is it? I have an Onkyo AVR--one of the beefy boys. I have 3 HDMI sources hooked up to the HDTV switched through the Onkyo.

All you have to do is select the source using the Universal remote: BDP, CD, PS3--turn on the Onkyo and select the right input? Change the HDMI source on the HDTV to HDMI-1 and there you go.

Now, all that is not any problem for a 13 year old, but for my wife it generates a panic attack. The Onkyo has already been set up by me. Nothing to do but press buttons for the right source, the AVR does everything else.

Onkyos are NOT hard to use. So my response is, for some wives 'nothing' and I mean 'nothing' will seem 'easy' to use!

    Good Luck!

Mine LOVES our Harmony remote, I have it set up so you just have to touch on the screen what you want to do, thats what fixed it for me. As far as easy AVR's, I really liked my Onkyo in that aspect, I had a 607, very user friendly. Now my newer Pioneer SC-25 is a different story, thats about the only thing I don't like about it vs. Onkyo.

Yes, Cody, your Onkyo 607 *is* very user-friendly...thanks again!

I would just buy the receiver you want. Ease of use would be adding a simple remote to control it all as mentioned earlier. Wife doesn't care about MCACC, Audessey, YPAO. Just tweak everything, give her the Harmony and let her test drive the setup. Done deal.

    True story:

Wife accompanied me on our purchase of our first (and so far only) receiver. The units were narrowed down to Denon and Harmon Kardon. She chose Harmon Kardon because Denon sounded too much like Demon.

Ironically, the demon has been the HK.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

    +2 on the Harmony,

Even with all its automation my wife still manages to get the HT so messed up nothing will work for her, and comes whining, and I have to sort it all out.

As far as WAF goes though she is cool, even encouraged me to get the big Polks (which I mostly play when she is away). She is fine with most anything I choose component wise.....she mostly chooses what WE watch though.

My wife never knows when I replace or ugrade anything expect speakers. To her it's all the same as I always have some kind of Control thats easy for her and the rest of the family.

Besides the Harmony remote idea. Have here work the AVR a few times. Nothing beats actual hands on use.

My wife doesn't go crazy with the settings but she can switch from one input to another and from 2ch to HT.
