Not smart, need help on rears...

Current line up ...
  1. Fronts - 800i's
  2. Center - CS400
  3. Sub - Velodyne CT120
  4. Surround - FX500i's
I have decided that I want another pair of speakers behind me for musical purposes. Does anyone have a good sounding front and rear speaker collaboration to recommend ... with musicality as the primary consideration? Does it just make sense to add another pair of 800i's? Is there something that works better? I know that many of you have great suggestions and opinions relating to this and I hope you chime in.

Note: I don't want to spend more than the cost of the 800i's, or have a bigger sound behind me than in front of me.

    Hi Orangetoupe-

I have a similar setup, except that I have 1000's front A side, and the 800's B side.
I think the 1000's work better in home theater,
due to their powered subs. The 800's have good mid-range and high end. Together, when playing music, I get a full blend and it sounds full and complete.

    sounds good to me,

Depends on what you have for space etc....

I think you will find a matching pair of 800i's to work well. Due to my space constraints, I have a little pair of R10's in the back and with 5ch stereo, it sounds very good.

I think you will find that for music purposes any conventional speaker will work better than an fx speaker.

    Just my .02

Thanks to both of you for your replies...

I was trying to figure out if the idea in matching fronts to rears, was to have the two pairs resemble each other as closely as possible (sound-a-likes), or to have them separately bring to bare individual strengths, and thus balance out each other's weaknesses.

I'm not looking for an enormous thumping base speaker, I have an effective sub, but something that will really help to envelop me in complete quality sound. If I go Polk again, it would likely be the 600i or 800i. Is there another speaker out there to match well with the 800i's? Another brand? Klipsch or Infinity?

Why not the RT55i's on stands... You dont have the cost of the towers but you get the dual drivers- and is a total match for your 800's... you could even do 35i's...IMO....

I'm with Ice. Real nice speakers. You've already got the bass. Somewhere on here there is the Stereophile review of the 25i.
I'm not familiar with the f/x series. Does it have the dipole/bipole switch?

Is the "top of the park" closed for the season? It's been a few years.

Right, the f/x series is both dipole/bipole capable with a simple switch manipulation.

Haven't tried to go to "The Top of the Park" in a few years, sadly, I cannot say for certain if it's still up and running in the summer or not.

Yes, the RT55i's may well be the choice, however, (blasphemy) I've read some rather favorable reviews of the Klipsch RB-3 & RB-5 bookshelves as well. Has anyone run these three speakers side by side and come up with a conclusion? I'm really after musical compatibility with my fronts and rears, I'm not concerned with anything else right now. I want to get lost in beautiful music between my RT800i's and whatever else works best with them. I'm thinking that I can accomplish this by bringing in one of the three aforementioned speakers.

I have some Sanus stands that will bring any of the three choices level with my front soundstage. Oh, what to do?

Anyone have any balls? An honest queery deserves an honest answer. Give me the real deal, someone step up to the plate. The idea is for all of us to get the best sound for the buck WE spend. I've spent a shitload on Polk speakers, so what? Tell me what will sing best with my RT800i's ...
    1. Polk RT55i's
    2. Klipsch RB-3's
    3. Klipsch RB-5's

Many of you folks claim to know what you're talking about ... so let's get it on!! I'm trying to get a great system going here, this is what this forum is all about. Don't hide your opinions ... share them!!

If any of you asked me about SCSI bus systems and how they compared with IDE devices ... I'd tell you all about the various nuances. What gives with the hold-up on speaker quality? Curious about whether FDISK or FORMAT commands create the Master Boot Record (MBR)? That's right ... I wouldn't hold back. So give it to me straight.

A lot of people criticize Polks for being harsh... but Klipsch speakers IMO from my experience are even harsher. Now..it my be my Yammie amplifier.... but I have heard many different series of klispch speakers on a yammie rx800 and too tell ya the truth... I did not like it at all. some like the Horns on the Kilpsch speakers and they are very sensitive...Just not for me. It is advised if you go the klipsch route to get a warm amp to go with them....

Unlike disk drives and utilities, speakers are very much a matter of opinion. Everyone hears things differently. In my opinion Klipsch suck hardcore. Have you ever listened to a pair of their speakers? Ugh. With Klipsch speakers it seems that most people either love them or hate them. My guess is that if you like the "Polk sound" you won't like Klipsch speakers. In your scenario I would either get the RT55i or the RT800i speakers. Good luck.

nothing technical here either, but i'm like arron, klipsch sucks, but as he stated with speakers, that's just an opinion... let your ears do the deciding. let us know what you get.

what Aaron said. Listening to Klipsch is painful.....I say the 55i's or the 800i's.

Thanks for piping up people, now I'm even more confused.

It is strange to hear such disparity of view on a given speaker ... I guess speakers aren't like strawberries, everyone tastes a strawberry and says, "ooh, that was tasty."

That is a nice price for another pair of 800i's, I wonder, is that price honored at all CC's across the states?

And now, a joke for you polk folks...

    Desert Island

A ship wrecks somewhere in the Pacific Ocean and the lone survior is washed up on a desert island. After surveying his surroundings he determines that the only other signs of life are one pig and one dog.

The man learns to live off of the island. He has fresh water from a spring and fruits grow abundantly. However, as the months go on, his sexual urges become stronger and stronger. Finally, in complete sexual hysteria, he grabs the pig and has his way with it. For some reason, however, the dog jumps up and bites him in the ****.

Weeks go by, and every day the man ravishes the pig and the dog bites him in the ****. One day, a beautiful young woman washes up on the shore. The man performs CPR and brings her back to life. She is so happy she says, "Thank you so much! I will give you anything you want!"

    "Anything?" the man says.

    "Anything." the woman replies.

"OK," he says, "will you hold this **** dog?"

Still laughing? Great ... I've another for you ...

    "The Leprechaun"

A man walks into a public bathroom and begins using one of the urinals. He looks to his left and sees a very short man peeing also. Suddenly, the short man looks up at the taller man, and the taller man is completely embarrassed about staring at the smaller man's ****.

"Sorry," says the taller man. "I'm not **** or anything, but you have the longest **** I've ever seen, especially on a man so small!"

"Well," says the Leprechaun, "That's because I'm a Leprechaun! ALL Leprechauns have penises this size!" The taller man says, "Incredible! I'd give anything if mine were that long."

"Well, what with me being a Leprechaun and all, I can give you your wish! If you let me take you into that stall over there and ravish you from behind, I'll give you your wish!"

"Gee," says the man, "I don't know about that----aw hell with it, OK!"

Soon, the Leprechaun is behind the taller man, and having a rather raucous go of it.

"Say," says the Leprechaun, "How old are you, son?"

Finding it difficult to turn around with the Leprechaun buggering him so utterly and completely, the tall man says over his shoulder, "Uh-Uh, th-th-thirty-t-t-two..."

"Imagine that," says the little man, "Thirty-two and still believes in Leprechauns."
