VM Series 5x1 vs. 7x1 Setup
I bought speakers about two years ago but almost immediately relocated and never got everything installed. I bought 2x VM30, 1 VM20, and 4x VM10. I also have a BIC F12 sub and a Denon 4310CI AVR. My new family room is not as big as the one in my old house and is roughly 23'.x15'. In my new house I still never got the VM10s installed as I can't do it myself and other items were more important. But, I'm finally getting around to it.
I liked the VM series sound and the wife liked the looks. However, a shop came out to give me an estimate on the install of my four VM10s, but they recommended I just go with a 5x1 using two VM10s in the rear instead of a 7x1 with 2 VM10s in the rear and two VM10s in a front height setup. I can't really use side surround speakers as one side is a sliding glass door to the pool and the other side a wet bar.
Just curious if anyone uses a a 7x1 front height setup with these speakers. If so, do you notice a difference between 5x1 and 7x1? If so, in what way? They said they would do the 7x1 if I wanted, but I wouldn't notice any real difference in their opinion. The 5x1 is cheaper install, I'd have to string extra speaker wire and the added installation effort for the front height ones, I'm curious if there are any differing opinions with the info I provided, other than "Ya, the speakers might sound better if I actually used them" :-) I'm almost exclusively interested in television/dvd/Blu-ray watching too. Maybe 20% music at most.

That should be a nice sounding set up when completed.
I can't comment on the front height config. as I have never heard it, but some here have said it adds a lot to the overall movie experience. But with a smaller room I think I would just stick to a 5.1 set up. Sell the extra speakers, or maybe set up a second zone for music in another room if the Denon will support it. -
I originally had a Harman Kardon AVR254 with the VM30s, VM20, and sub. I was going to get a pair of VM10s for a complete 5x1, but got a very nice deal on a Denon 4310CI AVR . So, I said to myself four VM10s is most definitely better than two with the 4310CI setup. I'd read some about front height speakers which takes advantage of the z-axis using Pro Logic? IIz. The front height speakers point down at a 45 degree angle so, in theory, when it rains in a movie it sounds like it's coming from on-top of your room. My Denon 4310CI AVR utilizes Pro Logic? IIz with front height speaker positioning -- but I got side tracked with some health problems and never even got my original VM10s installed. Ha! Then, I moved across the country twice and now my family room is smaller 23' x 15' with the couch to TV distance being the 15' portion.
I suspect the shop is probably right. I would say I don't have the most sensitive ears and probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Digital EX, DTS-ES, Pro Logic IIx, Pro Logic IIz or DTS Neo:6 decoding when Transformers, Terminator, or Avatar is cranking. To be honest, I suspect it would sound the same to me in 5x1 or 7x1 in my family room. I was just curious if others can tell a significant difference with the VM series between 5x1 and 7x1. Without any 'Dude -- I added a couple of VM10 font height speakers and I thought I was going to drown watching the final fight between Neo and Smith in Matrix Revolutions", I'll stick with the 5x1 and sell the 2 VM10s or put 'em in another zone. Especially since I have to pay to get it done and not just waste my own time. Thanks for the reply.
