Planning ahead, is it really too difficult for some?

Seriously!

Like the people in the checkout line in front of you. Is it too difficult for them to think a few minutes ahead and get their card out, and get ready to run it through the CC machine before the checker is done ringing up their stuff? Why do they wait until the checker is done before getting out their means of payment?

How about those that know where they are driving too yet wait until the very last chance to change lanes. Why?

Life would flow much smoother, and faster if people would just think a little ahead.

I would state, based on my experience with people doing things to enterprise level, mission critical systems, that no, planning ahead is completely foreign to most people. This is why I get calls at 3 am that start with "we just upgraded our production environment and now everything is down ...", and my first question is always "did you test this in a lab, or at least make backups or have any back out plan?". 99.999% of the time, the answer to both is "no". So if they can't be bothered with a bit of planning before doing something that can take down their entire business, why would they do any planning for anything as minor as going to the store or when to get off the hiway?

What about those people who wait until they get to the toll booth to get their money out of their wallets/handbags?

It probably does not even occur to some people to think ahead.

I love self checkout at hardware stores. It bugs me when the cashier has rung everything up, things are bagged. And the person has to fumble around looking for a checkbook. Pet peeve, I guess.

undoubtly, when I do use a check out clerk... for some odd reason, I always get the slowest darn lane possible.. the other lanes are flying through with the customer check outs. and it ends up taking me twice as long as the long line.. and I choose the short lane.. crazy!!

I used to see that crap all the time at the store I used to work at.
So when someone was yapping on thier cell I would just stand there and look at them till they asked what I was waiting for to ring them up and I would reply,,,thats okay Ill just wait till your done talking to whoever, and he/she would just give me that look as if I was the one being an ****.And of course Id have to wait while she would fumble around for the card or cash while people were waiting behind. And right in front of them was a big sign stating no cell talking at the checkout.
And 9 out of 10 customers would always wait till the total was hit to get out the payment.I got so sick of that after a while I would just go do something else and make them wait for about the same amount of time they made me wait.

Also, why do women always have change with them, and fumble around for the .58 cents needed to make an exact payment on their $XX.58 purchase?

I like using the self checkout lanes since the lines are shorter. But if I see elderly people in the self checkout lane I will go to another lane. Not all elderly are at fault but most of them are confused and sometimes intimidated using the self checkout. Many times when I am behind them I have to help them with their checkout. They need to go to a checkout that haves a clerk!!

Then there's the guy pulling out of the strip mall.
Pull out, block traffic, turn left by SLOWLY squeezing in.
Too much effort to go 400 yards down where the light is
and turn left. His time is SO much more valuable then everybody
around him. I really need to start taking a little paint off the side
of their car with my truck bumper.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that sounds like a woman to me. I don't know many guys that right checks. Yes, that is bit sexist I guess. Men also don't need to give the cashiers exact change out of their coin purse either.

The worst place for people not planning ahead is the airport. They know they have a connecting flight. They flight attendant announces the gates and they don't even bother to take a look at the in flight magazine and figure out where they have to go. These same people have already checked in and must go up to the gate desk and have the person up there double check everything. I hate flying on Saturdays and Sundays

On 's**tty things people do' in public lines (check out lanes, traffic, etc):

    - I think the answer is that they simply don't care. What's in it for them?

On planning on the larger scale/mid-long time scale (enterprise unplanning, etc):

    - If it's their first time doing said project, then expect them to focus and get tied up on the short term issues. They're not even sure they'll get to the mid/long term parts that need 'planning' yet.

    - If it's some recurring s**t by experienced people: yep, they're probably just lazy.

Plan ahead? As in planning meals, fitness, budget, and getting to work in time so Steven Spielberg doesn't fire you type of planning? If this nation planned ahead, we'd all be fit, financially stable, and there'd be no rush hour traffic because 1) we'd make time to get to work and 2) the local govt would lay out streets, roads, and highways in anticipation of growth.

    Yeah, right.

C'mon gents, really ? Your bitchin' about a few minutes in a checkout line ? Some of you guys wait longer to get a beer at a concert, stand in line for hours to get the latest IPHONE, waste more time out of your day on facebook.

It's called human interaction, and we all are built different, think different, function different. I'll admit we all have habits that may drive others nuts, like posted above, but does it really matter in the big picture ? Isn't it just plain old life as we know it ? By the sound of things, you guys are turning into hermits who shun as much human interaction as possible and are becomming less tolerant of others trivial misgivings. If a couple minutes one way or another means that much to you, you need to slow the f#%k down.

I don't get upset waiting in checkout lines, I don't enjoy it, but I expect it. Besides, don't blame people who pay slowly, blame the store for having 24 checkout lanes, but only 2 of them open.

I think there is a complete lack of "planning skills" taught in many schools, including High School and some College-level degrees.
Also, I think people who plan ahead generally have a better work-ethic than those who fail or refuse to plan ahead. Just my .02
