I am thinking far in advance of my next sub upgrade, but I am thinking about going with something like dual Craigsub SS-18.P?s. These are 18" passive subs. Now they have a kit that is ~1500 that you can run both subs off the included amp and get ~1k in power. BUT I want to be able to EQ each sub independently which I can?t as the amp included in the kit is a 1 channel.

So I am looking for an external 2 channel (500 wpc @ 8 ohm) or 2 500 watt mono?s.

I have also highly debated dual Epik Empires, but am hoping to make the Craigsubs work as they are downfiring and that means dogs/future kids cant poke holes in the drivers

Yeah, I have heard that as well as the Behringer Europower EP4000, and the QSC GX-5.

I am not sure on the pro amps in a HT setup, especially since they have fans which may or may not make massive amounts of noise.

Is this one of the few times that a pro amp would be the right application?

A pro amp driving a sub should be no problem. I just don't know about Chase(Craigsub) products. I know some of the reviews have been pretty negative( nails showing, problems with the foot pegs ,etc.) over at AVS. That said the guy does know his stuff, as he has done many sub reviews with various product. If you decide to pull the trigger let us know how you like it.

    Dayton Audio SA1000 Subwoofer Amplifier

Class D power that runs at 950w into 4 ohms. It has on-board EQ, soft-clip, and no fans or noisy parts.

Yes, but it only uses 1 input. So you cant EQ each sub individually, but just as a pair.

its a HT sub amp. I wouldn't worry about it being a pro audio amp being used for that. The fans normally are not too bad with crowns as that is what we used all the time in my high school's recording studio and never had an issue with fan noise.

There are also fan mods that you can do with them.

Gotcha. I know they are kinda frowned upon for driving speakers, so didnt know if the same held true for subs.

I will keep that on my short list in the future and need to do some reading up on it.

I am aware of the fan mod's but personally hate to void the warranty on something that costs that much, especially when more than likely I will (when I purchase and use it) be driving it massively.

Does it need its own dedicated circuit, or could I run it off the same one as my other gear (5 channel amp, TV, AVR, ect) are on?

I would suggest the QSC RMX2450. I have one that runs dual 18" Yamaha subs and the thing absolutely has the power. It is fan cooled but it is variable and is extremely quiet.

That one is a bit out of my price range. I have probably 400-500 for the amp MAX.

I am in the same boat my current sub project will need 800 watts , I am setting up 4x12" it needs 200 watts per driver .
my current sub is 2x12" and have used prosound amps always , I first used a crown xls and now using a older jbl , they both have fans but not much louder than computer fans , all prosound amps have a multispeed fan and in home use should stay on the slow/quiet speed .
I would love to use adcom 555 amps but they are to expensive , I was looking at the new peaver IPR 1600 amp its only like $400 new .
But if I were you I would buy used(ebay) prosound amps , they are best bang for the buck !
just buy something tested and works (not just powered up) if you got the fat wallet buy new and dont want fans buy a adcom or something but I found I never notice the fans unless its a older amp with a noisy fan , in that case I just replaced the fan .
The crown xls did not sound good for subs maybe its the amp type ?g/h?
versus a good class-A/B type but I heard QSC makes a great sounding amp OR a crown microtech is a great choice and always holds its value .

I have to say I prefer downfiring subs myself. I prefer to not know where the sound is coming from.

Not a fan of the Crown XLS series. There Microtech series is nice stuff.

I am a big fan of QSC on the sound quality front.

I kinda am thinking these are my options in no particular order:

    Behringer EP-4000
    QSC GX-5
    MARATHON DJ-4000

your right I had a crown xls 402 and my sub didnt have the lows I desired so I ran a dbx 120 sub bass harmonizer thing to it (the dbx gets the lowest tone and produces one lower w/it)
that worked but later when I got the jbl I found that I did not need the dbx inline for lows that start at 20hz , problem was the xls amp .
So I have been told by many the qsc amps sound great .

    Behringer EP-4000
    QSC GX-5
    MARATHON DJ-4000

Add to your list a peavey IPR (800,1600) amp , I asked many people since its so new I cant get a feeedback on them , but if you find out anythinng PLEASE put your findings in this forumn .
    the ipr 800 is 400 watts x 2 , its like $350 on parts express .
Peavey is a great company that has been building amps a long time with a great reputation .
On your top list the only one I think will hold up the gx5 and has a good resale value , I am tempted w/behringer (not marathon thats a bad as nady)
I noticed some models of behringer varie a bunch by specs so be carefull with that brand , I dont think you need to worry about using a qsc or macrotech as long as the model you choose has enough power .

The Behringer was suggested by Craig, as was the GX5. I know nothing about the Peavey and since it is new I prob wont look into it.

Some behringer is good such as the 2030 truth speakers I will look into that ep-4000 also , the peavey is a class-d its just a sub amp , class d has been used in car amps for ?15? years so we will see if peavey continues with the line .
