HI guys, Sincethis is the vintage page for speakers I was wondering what kind of reviews you would give me for my speakers. They are a set of 80s era Infinity SM112s. I have already been to the Audiokarama review site and have had mixed reveivs. It does seem that vets that bought these at PXs
were totally enamered w/ these speakers. As you get futhur down into the reviews there are a lot of people who think that they lack in bass bottom production. For me I really like them and really do not need the thump of a 15in Cerwin-VEGA. Of course most speakers and their reproduction is very subjective. That being said if cash was realitively no object I think the high 800 B&W line would be first then may be the omni directional OHM/WALSH 2X OR 4XS.My dream system would be a MacIntosh 2105 amp w/ a C-28 pre- a cdp source and some refurbed ESS HEIL amt-1t w/the pyramid shape.
Fanatsy ,yes but we all can dream ......lw

As best as I can remember them....

Bass errs on the boomy side of things (rather than musical bass), not the best crossover integration, sorta hot in the treble. The SM series was your run-of-the-mill rock speaker for the time; competing with Pioneer HPM's, JBL's, Klipsch, CV, etc. Nothing special (sorry, you asked for honesty), and no where near the refinement of the RS series Infinity's.

They are a dorm room/party speaker.

I sold that line at a discount merchandise store similar to Walmart in the 80's. Totally forgetable speakers. The JBL's and Advents of the day were a lot better and even then that's not saying a whole lot.

Think rock/party speaker along the lines of Cerwin Vega's of that era. Steve hit the nail on the head. Poor bass, poor frequency integration, hot with a little siblance on the highs, nasally mids, flat soundstage.

Sorry, but you asked for honesty.

While I am not a fan of this particular Infinity speaker there are some Infinity's that I would love to own. Like the IRS Beta or IRS Gamma series.

The Sm112 isn't very unique to me, it isn't a bad sounding speaker but it also isn't the be all end all. I am sure they can sound quite good with the right equipment around them and I will give props to the dome tweeter. Always have liked Infinity's tweeters.

If I had my way I would have a couple of Belle's and the Infinty IRS Beta's to play with.

That's pretty much what I expected. But to put it all in perspective I did get them through C/L for $40 and were recently refoamed plus the fact that they were only 1 town away from me on the Pkwy. Yes I gave you my fanatasy spks but these do hold up well against my Adcom amp and either the Onkyo P-301 pre or the Yamaha pre-outs of the Rx-v665. I know there're are much better and way more expensive spks out there, I just can't afford them. Thanks for the response.
