This is one powerful unit, easily matches and exceeds the Yamahas you're running Jim! I know because I have one.

And with the cooling fan it's a good deal for anyone not into the 3D scene yet. Has HDMI 1.3a, decodes all HD formats. Has pre-outs (extra zones for other rooms). Weighs almost 51lbs without the packaging--heavier than either of the Yamahas above. Don't understand why you're letting this go--but hey, that's good for someone here.

    Original packing, also a PLUS!

This is one of my favorite AVRs and, IMHO, Onkyo's best pound for pound, dollar for dollar value AVR. Massive transformer, 30K in capacitance (for a consumer AVR).

Yeah it gets 'hot' but you get a cooler with it!

    GLWTS!

My assumption would be as he's running a Sunfire amp he doesnt need the extra horsepower this Onkyo has.....

but I am known to be wrong often, just as my wife

Your assumption is correct. I use Sunfire and Carver amps for my Lsi system and they are in the 400 watt range at 4 ohms. I have a new Denon now and I hope to find a home for the Onkyo. It is a very good AVR. I will also be selling one of my Yamaha's AVR
s and also a Polk RT speaker HT set. I have quite a few of RT speakers and I am trying to decide which fronts, center and rears I will include in the sale. I will post it soon. Thanks.

I thought the xx5 series from Onkyo we're the sought after AVRs, or was it only the 705? Either way, solid unit with a good price, GLWTS!

So, your saying that your wife is often wrong as well, I'm telling her!

It was the 605 that was one of the very first to decode HD surround formats from their bitstream form directly. Which made the 605 highly sought after for a 'short' time.

But the real heavy lifters were the models from the 805 and above. With their Burr Brown DACs, massive power, and all the goodies the 605 had.

The 875 and 905, in addition, had the first REON vid processors and had pretty good up-scaling for that time. They also offered Onkyo's VLSC digital smoothing algorithms, etc.

But when all is said and done, the 875 and 905 were quite a bit more coin than the 805 and not radically 'better' sonically.

After that year the 800 series started to lose weight and though Onkyo rated them the same. One look on their backside tells the story--a loss in real power coming from you wall. Then for a while the 100x series became the 805 replacement but as of the last year or so the 100x looks a lot like the 800s after the 805. And now you have to hit the 3000 series to get equivalent amplification. Admittedly the newer models are loaded with extra tech goodies but at the expense of their weight and power--amplification, that is.

A new Denon? I guess that's OK. But Mantis (Dan) might disagree with that choice. lol

Oh yeah, the Sunfire. A nice piece for the Carver crowd. I still don't know what I think about Bob Carver. I do like the Pass designs I've heard and John Curl. But a lot of Bob's work seems a bit cheap and unreliable to me? But, then again, I haven't seen enough of it.

Guys like Pass and Curl don't talk a lot but Bob seems to be constantly broadcasting himself. He's a master of self-promotion...I guess that's not a bad thing. Enough for now!

    Everyone has his tastes.

Thats sort of what I thought, I knew I had read somewhere that the 705 and up of that series we're pretty heavy, and put out some great power, underrated even. Enough derail here, on with the sale!

This is tempting as I am looking for a receiver to place in the back room and keeping my Pioneer VSK-21txh in the living room. How is this compared to my Pioneer?Any thoughts

First of all both receivers are a bit dated by now. But yours even more so. You cannot process HD sound formats with the Pioneer.
Does the Pioneer even have HDMI inputs? If it does they are primitive compared to the Version 1.3 on the Onkyo.

The Onkyo has 3 HDMI ins that can pass both sound and picture and decode new hiigh-res. Blu-ray soundtracks. The 805 is also a 50+lbs receiver that can deliver a true 130 watts x 5 (and almost as much in 7 channels). A hell of a bargain.

But less important for you because you're using that Denon as your power for the front 3? So the only real advantage would be HDMI decoding?

cnh, VSX-21TXH is a newer receiver than Onkyo 805 and can do everything that 805 can. Onk's amp is beefier, but flyfisher doesn't really need that feature.

Good catch. My google search led me to the VSX 21 which is much older.

In that case. There is nothing to be gained here because you already have good front amplification.

It's not that old lol.It does have 4 HDMI inputs that are 1.3 and does decode HD like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD

Not looking for anything new like 3D so 1.4 wont be necessary.I was looking at the Onkyo's specs and it looks impressive.Plus you can purchase an i-Pod dock.I do hook my Pod to my Pioneer.

Like I said earlier, just looking for another receiver to place in the back room or place the Pioneer in the back and possibly the Onkyo in the living room.

Didn't mean to jack your thread blue.I am interested in the Onkyo and wanted to know more about the receiver because I never actually never heard one.Do they have a warm, bright sound etc.

flyfisher, Onkyo, Pioneer and Marantz were my three final choices when I picked 805. It's a very capable receiver, not bright at all, I'd say more neutral sounding.

All I can say is that I just watched the latest Harry Potter film (last night) on this Onkyo with my "lowly" Monitor 70 set up and the soundtrack was "phenomenal" with no need for external amplification!

TX-SR805, yeah it's a bit old at this point. But for HT sound it does it all! Can't believe this is "still" here.

I am surprised myself. I would go $375.00 cash and carry or $425.00 shipped. That's one hell of a AVR for that price in mint condition, plus an external cooling fan. If I didn't have so much gear I would keep it.
