Hey folks,
I am a long term lurker here, and finally felt it prudent to introduce myself.
My name is Walker, I am a college student studying mechanical engineering at UNC Charlotte, where I will be a senior this next year.
It all started a year or so ago, when I was poking around and decided to get a little Pioneer SX-535 of craigslist. Luckily I scored a pair of Polk rt600's for $10 at a local church selling them on craigslist not but a few days after.
I recapped my Pioneer, and loved the sounds it was able to push.
Fueled by my desire for loud music and living in a college house that hosted parties of the "upbeat" nature. I purchased a pair of KLH cheap 3-ways for $20. I also picked up an Adcom GFA-454 which blew away my friends. I realized this was a very cheap setup, and wanted to work on something nicer. Keep in mind I was on a budget here working in between classes.
I found a nicer pair of KLH 3-ways which I hooked in parallel to run a 4ohm load into the Adcom. This sounds much better and continues to be my "don't have to worry about it" or "party" setup. It will shake the house pretty well and people love it.
Needless to say, I was always on the hunt for some "hi-fi" gear, and noticed a CL add for "Polks with lots of speakers" for $75. Turned out to be a pair of SDA-1A's, which I must say can make my eyes tear up with emotion when listening to my favorite acoustical pieces by Leo Kottke and the like.
So I wanted more to push my SDA's, and purchased a broken GFA-555 which I have been unable to fix (bummer). Recently, I bought a Carver M1.5t, which came in the mail today...WOW, what a difference this amp puts into the SDA's.
I have the bug and couldn't pass up a Carver M4.0t that was recently refurbished by a reputable shop for $330 on Audiogon tonight. Cannot wait to compare it to the M1.5t, which is in need of a recap (slight hum).
At any rate, hope I haven't bored you. And I appreciate reading all of your experiences and opinions over the past few years and in the future.
Cheers,
Walker

I love seeing a college man get into music and stereo equipment. I have a vintage stereo store in a college town and need the younger market. Enjoy all your toys and teach your friends. Welcome to the site.

Oh, hell. Another Charlotte cat. Lord help us.
Stay away from Trey. You have been warned. Welcome to Club Polk.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -

Welcome to Club Polk!!
Nice stuff! I also have an old pair of PARTY KLHs around in storage--used them in Grad School for that (12", 3 ways) can play loud but not very accurate.
A lot of people here like Carvers with SDAs.
Personally, I think, when you get some cash together, you should consider a good TUBE amp or integreated Tube amp with SDAs--it's a nice pairing. If you like the Carver, which 'some' people claim is a warmer sounding amp. Then you'll love the Tubes!
Have fun. What's your major? And what year are you: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, a senior?
Love the Dudeman, handle. The Dudeman abideth!

Welcome, Walker!
Thanks for posting, I'm a big Leo Kottke fan myself. One of the best concerts I ever attended was with him and Michael Hedges. The last third of the concert they played together, amazing! That one should have been made into a record. -
