Glow Audio Sub One Subwoofer - 10/10 - Bamboo - *SOLD* to DMara

Here's another subwoofer that I picked up for a shootout with some others but just got too busy. It could easily compliment the Audioengine A5 loudspeakers I have for sale in another thread or to add-on to another, existing system. I've heard a handful of other mini-subs like the Pinnacle Baby Boomer, Audioengine S8, the subwoofers included with the Surround Bar systems as well as the PSW111 and this is one of the more musical of the bunch.

I'd say between the bunch, the Pinnacle Baby Boomer and this one are the fastest and most musical and it's the smallest of them all at 9" square. This one is particlurly fast due to a well made 6.5" driver size complimented with an equal PR in lieu of a ported design. I believe the sealed designs blend better as well. The SBar subwoofers also sport a smaller subwoofer driver but they are tuned entirely different. This is strictly for music IMO and Polk has nothing at this level. I would say think REL if I was to reference it to another manufacturer.

This hasn't even been opened and still has the packing straps on it. I heard this subwoofer in conjunction with an entire Audioengine lineup and a Glow Audio setup using the Glow Audio Voice One at a dealers' house and grabbed it since it was the only one he had left. It would be PERFECT for a small rig or to pick up, or re-enforce the lower octave for a pair of Magnepan or Quad loudspeakers for example. It blends VERY easily.

The finish is Bamboo and overall build quality is outstanding. The panels are in Bamboo with nicely perforated grills that snap in and the edges have a tight tolerance across the board. This is a far better manufactured subwoofer than you would ever find from someone else at <$500-1000, let alone the $325 I'm selling it for here. I'm really taken by the brass footers, edge work and grills in regards to construction.

It has some serious adjustable brass spikes with built-in floor protectors. It does tend to walk a little bit under heavy load but nothing that can't be solved with a small amount of Blu-Tack under each foot. This is also a nice add-on compared to the thermoplastic spikes on the S8 and Polk subwoofers. That's probably $80 saved from picking them up from Grant @ Myesound.

Reviews: There are two solid reviews from 6Moons(Realiszation Award Product) - 2009 and Positive Feedback(Issue 44) - 2009.

"Glow Audio's Sub One is beautifully built and superbly attractive in its anthracite/bamboo skins and classy brass footers. It performs exactly like a musical subwoofer should even in a big room - quick, properly damped, powerful, without bloat, ring or sloppiness and good into the low 30s."

"Make no mistake, the Glow subwoofer is the real deal … the doubled-up drivers of the Sub One have more kick and energize more profoundly … you can play the most beastly bass whoppers in your collection and not feel shortchanged. That it manages to do all that for $408 delivered globally is shocking. It truly is. Bravo. "

If you read the earlier thread for the Audioengine S8 subwoofer, I had the pics and verbage mixed up as I was trying to write these at the same time. Sorry for the confusion.

    Hi Mark!

I was a little confused by the specs on saw on the manufacturer
s page. Does the amp on this sub have a 140 watt output capacity?

It's a 60w internal amplifier and @ 95db sensitivity is more than enough for a 6.5" driver. The 140w figure is total power consumption under a full load but I wouldn't equate that to actual amplifier output since I'm unsure of the type and design.

Better? Thanks for asking Carl, that's a great question.

The size is compelling and the color matches my decor. I have an old 8", 100 watt HSU that is surprising big and very black. It is so musical that I can't part myself with it. However, I'm looking for a fast musical sub with just a bit more power in a smaller footprint that won't break the bank since I don't use a sub more than 20% of the time. This would be one of those components that one would have to hear because it may produce more sound and be more musical than it has a right to. The price is right and looks great. If you don't sell it, I will be in Baltimore the first week of August. I pass Damascus on my way down and back so we'll see. Thanks for the prompt reply.

    Best regards.

I understand. I'm a huge fan of diminutive, high quality subwoofers and this is one of them. Not every subwoofer has to hit <20hz to be awesome and far more subwoofers are nowhere close to musical. It's a misunderstood speaker since most people only think of explosions and depth charges when it comes to a subwoofer.

Carl, why wait? Mark could ship a baby in a glass vase and it would arrive intact.

This thing looks incredible.. I'm currently trying to talk myself out of an impulse purchase.. How would you think these would fit with the new LSiM bookshelves, or would this add some more musical low-end to the SDA-2's?

Jason - I can only guess on these things but we were able to blend the one I heard out of the box very easily with a pair of Magnepan SMG. It was perfect. I didn't have a whole test bed of other loudspeakers to check it on but I would bet its an easy drop-in subwoofer for just about any system.

Don't buy on impulse but it is a beautiful subwoofer in person. I'd suggest you read more about it from my link, check out some more pics and think about how it would fit into your current room....where especially. It's small enough to move around and tweak that's for sure.

If I was to pick a speaker it would be better for, I'd say the SDA2 since it's a bit slow on the low end wherein the LSiM 703 is not in any way. I would find it more suited to a mid-size loudspeaker and spot-on perfect for Magnepan and similar low end challenged panel loudspeakers.

No problem Jason and I want to ensure you make the right decision, not just make another sale. That's not how I operate. I assure you it will rock your PC setup. I've done subwoofers in PC rigs before and while they rule, I don't game enough cool stuff to warrant them as my Quad's handle everything perfectly since it's so nearfield.

I recently heard a buddy's full on 7.1 gaming system with chair and it was honestly too scary for me when playing FEAR II, or whatever it's called. I think I'm starting to flake out a bit as I get older or maybe the medication is affecting my senses more than I realize. It was 100% CREEPY.

If you do pick it up, it will be an uncommon piece for your setup. While everyone else gets something generic, you'll have something cooler and much more unique

Geez, Mark, you know I own a pair of Audioengine AP4 powered by Audioengine N22 amp (LOVE THEM!!!). And of course I welcome the addition of a small fast, musical sub to the mix since my current Polk PW10 is a little bit slow and bloated for this office setup. Please choose for me, either this GLOW AUDIO Sub One or the Audioengine S8 from your other ad, I trust your judgement, as always

The S8 is SOLD so that makes the decision pretty easy. I've heard both and believe the S8 is more matched to the A5/AP4 setup but then again it should be. The PSW10 is an awful match since it's slow, bloated and not up to par with your office setup. That N22 amplifier is super cool BTW and your rig is what I'm talking about....solid secondary rigs are easy to do, inexpensive in the bigger picture and they can be so very cool.

That being said, this would also work just as well and it's probably a bit faster although the S8 would hit harder at the lower end of the ratings. Some alternatives would be the PSW111 from the Polk world or Pinnacle Baby Boomer, both of which would be better choices than what you currently have.

It's up to you man, I'm just the messenger

That definitely made it more easy to choose  I'll take this GLOW AUDIO Sub One.
The Audioengine S8 would be great to match the whole set. However I got bamboo floor, so this beautiful baby will make it as a very cool decor, too
