A friend of mine gave me these custom Tannoy's. I have no idea what to do with them, they are huge. I looked on line and found that Tannoy is well thought of, what are your thoughts? These were made in the late 50's or early 60's I think. If antone has info to share, please do. Sorry the pictures aren't very good

I bet they sound pretty 'good' but they look like Bedroom furniture!

Err... 4 mismatched speakers? You planning on running a 4 room mono system?
    Ludicrous gibs!

Feel free to pass them on to me.

The speaker in the center is a Monitor Silver in an Westminster type cabinet. The one on the right appears to be another Monitor Silver in a typical aftermarket Tannoy cab(probably 200 liters) with a slot port. I have no idea what that speaker is on the left.

great momma horsefeathers, son. Those are lifetime loudspeakers.
(and I don't know about the one on the left, either... but still)

I feel a little more than stupid, I had no idea what has been given to me. As I'm reading about these speakers I have to go and look at them and wonder why would anyone give these away. I still have no idea what to do with them, they won't fit in any room I have.

You could also ask him to build you narrower(18" wide) cabinets.

They'd be in my living room - they are at least on a par with the Altec 604E Duplexes that are there now... (and many would hold that they are even better).

They could pay his new shop's first month's rent (at least)...

as an aside... to this day, the noun "tannoy" (taken from the Tannoy loudspeakers and horns) is a colloquial synonym for "loudspeaker" in the UK; just as "Kleenex" is for "facial tissue", "Jello" is for "flavored gelatin food" or "Xerox" (still) is for "dry-process instant photocopy" in the US.

I know talking about money on this site is taboo but after reading some of the responses, what are these thing really worth? Is there added value having the cabs? I thought the cabs were made by a local cabinet maker, I didn't realize the speakers came this way.

Do me a favor and let me know what is in the odd cabinet on the left - I've never seen anything like that before. Just before you move them, or store them, whatever.

Honestly, if you don't NEED the cash, that's a HUGE rainy day to keep in the closet. It will do as well as most cd's or money market accounts. ;)

RuSsMaN, I will report on that left speaker. I think I will pull it and see what markings are on it and report back.

Dumb question time......were these originally meant to be used as mono's? Or are they each missing a mate?

it is quite possible; they could predate the era of common domestic stereo hifi, which really didn't start until the very late 1950s/early 1960s.

Well monitor silvers stopped being produced in the late 50's. So these are more than likely for a mono system.

The one in the middle looks very similar to the Corner GRF loudspeaker system.

I'm glad members are looking at these speakers, I would like to know as much as I can about these speakers. I'm going to pull the driver on the left speaker tonight, I will post the markings and hope someone has information about them. Thanks

Cayuga, My uncle had a pair of the Square GRF with the Silver 15's in them. It had an extremely open sound and very honest representation of live sound to me. Not live in the concert meaning but the live as in a guy and guitar meaning.

They weren't the biggest boomers on the block but that isn't what they were really designed for.

I wish I knew what happened to those speakers. I am sure a cousin has them somewhere or other.

Well if your really a friend of his the least you could do is after you sell them for thousands is split the loot with him  Karma works both ways

Please don't worry about my friend, he will be fine. I would love to keep these but have no room for them and no place to store them. I'm not trying to solicit anyone but I'm looking for the best way to sell these. Go through a dealer, straight listing (Craigslist/Ebay). Any thoughts or is this the wrong place to be asking. I know it's not a bad problem to have, just looking for some help. Thanks

Where are they being stored now? Hopefully out in the open where I will have easy access to them  J/K

What I would do is rent me a small climate controlled storage unit if I didnt have a place to store them and do a lot of research, find out exactly what they are, Who the previous owner/s were if possible, who made them etc tallk to him if possible, what previous auctions have went for etc then place threads everywhere I could find an audio forum letting people know you have them with very detailed pictures, once people start sending you PM's which they will let them know you will be putting them on Ebay in October prices of most audio gear jump in the fall and winter months due to people not spending money on outside activities and toys and that you will send them a PM with the listing number. Even though most likely they will sell to an overseas bidder who has more money than sense year around.

Let the auction run for as long as possible and give them the option of purchasing just the drivers or the complete speakers, there are collectors who would pay more to have them complete im sure.

Or you could just Karma them off to 3 lucky people here

BTW im not worried about your friend it was simply a word of friendly advice to be accepted or not your choice.
