just was hoping for a little direction...there are so many models and frankly I don't have a lot to spend on one...say $150 or so. there are a lot of Technics avaliable around that price range but are there models to steer clear of or others better than others? I appreciate your input.

I am by no means expert, but I am happy with the SL-1710mk2 I bought off eBay for $270 and even happier with the SL1700mk2 from Craigslist for $100 (although it needed some work). In the direct drive category, the mk2 with Quartz lock seems to beat the older servo controlled drive.

There is tons of info in the library at http://www.vinylengine.com/library/technics.shtml.

Also, don't shy away if the auto return doesn't work. It is usually just a <$10 belt that needs to be replaced.

I've had a 1700 since 1977 and it still works perfectly. I've never felt the need to go up to the MKII. Dual turntables are excellent but finding one in really good operating condition is difficult. I've decided based on experience that turntables for sale are on sale for a reason. If you can try to see the turntable and check out the operation.

No idea what your expectations are for a TT, but I still run a 1978 SL-1301 and it is at least as good as all those old vinyl albums it plays and surprises with accuracy and smoothness for the few new LPs added to the collection.

I bought it new in 1978 and had it "tuned up" in 2000. My LP listening doesn't require perfection though I've added a decent (budget) phono preamp and use an equally decent (budget) cartridge.

Sometimes I waste a few hours imagining what kind of new TT would look good sitting in the SL's place, but the Technics does its job ... for me. I think that with a target spend of $150 you'll feel the same way.

    Good luck.

I have a SL-1200 Mk2. I love it. Occasionally you will see one used on Craigslist for the $150 range you are looking for. That's actually what I originally paid for mine. I've since have put another $2000 into it and it sounds as good as any turntable I've ever heard for any price. The 1200 has a ton of upgrade potential and it was really fun to see each incremental improvement with each mod.
