Sense I have been a AMD CPU guy and a ASUS MOBO guy for years, I am looking to try something a bit different with my newest build.
Case is a Antec Skeleton
Looking to spend no more than 650 on Mobo, CPU, and RAM.
Other things I already have.
Open to suggestions.
My other computer has a AMD black edition cpu and a asus mobo.

You can go two ways with this
1. go for the 6 core AMD Phenom II with a AM3+ mobo and DDR3
2. wait until Bulldozer is released and go for AM3+ mobo and DDR3.
Here your looking to buy right now then here

The 6 core will easily do over 4ghz on your overclock if you got the skills mane.
Edit: I just recently upgraded my RAM to the 8gb Gskill Ripjaws X and it's awesome. 4GB was enough, but at $100 or so bucks it was worth it.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I could, however I am trying to go different than what I normally do. Normal meaning amd and asus mobo. If that what wins than so be it.HT setup

The 6 core will definitely give you more bang for buck. If your wanting to switch over to Intel ( Sandy bridge) then go for i7 + mobo and same RAM kit.

Better check out what you can actually run with a 6-core processor. Many consumer level licenses are limited to 2 or 4 cores and spending the money on a 6 core box could end up being a waste of time or more expensive than you thought.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Well you'll get hyperthreading w/ the i5s (2 cores / 4 threads) and i7s (4 cores / 8 threads or 6 cores / 12 threads), but it's harder to stay in budget w/ the Intel stuff. Depends on what you'd be using it for.
I've gone Q6700 -> Q9650 -> i7 920 -> i7 970, and video cards / ram seem to have more impact on things like gaming than the cpus. But encoding video and audio has improved significantly w/ each upgrade.
+1 to what Sherardp said ... perhaps give Sandybridge a shotALL BOXED UP for a while until I save up for a new place

This will be an intense back up rig. Are you planning to go SSD & secondary drive as well?Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

If you're looking to try out Intel on the cheap, take a look at the components I have for sale, hard to beat that price.

Ok, here's the question...how much of processor power does your work stuff need? For backup gaming rig, why not just a $100 Phenom II X4 840 ($100 w/ motherboard)? Or is this money "use it or lose it" work budget items? -

Lots of RAM is needed however I am doing this project as fun as well to try intel rather than amd sense I have never really used intel in a build.HT setup

So 64 bit OS, I take Windows 7? I have 12GB of DDR3 in triple channel with OC'ed i7-960. There is a huge difference in processing power of this machine compared to a 4GHz Q9550, especially in 3D animation and rendering.
What's the rest of the system going to look like, and budget for that? SLI, CrossFire in plans or just single card?
