Need help converting movie files.

My neighbor gave me the first 3 episodes of a current HBO series burned on a DVD. I downloaded the DivX player and got them to play but I want to convert them, and burn them onto a disc so I can play them in my theater. They are 720p with DD5.1 audio.

Running a properties check on the film I see a .rar and a .mkv. I have no idea what to look for or how to go about getting it converted to a normal DVD file so I can watch these on anything but my computer.

Any help would be great.
If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Transcoding video files gets tedious. I'd suggest you get a latest generation blu-ray player that has Divx and MKV support.

A month or so ago, I picked up a $100 LG BD650 for that sole purpose only. The LGs will play just about any file you throw at them, either on disc, by USB, or streaming from my PC over the network. I still have my older LG BH200 which has superior video quality (and plays HDDVD) for playing feature movies. All the internet downloads are played on the new one by streaming.

It's an .mkv file so I need software that will convert this to DVD. Anyone have some freeware to do this?

I have 3 Blu-ray players now, really don't want to buy another for just watching these. After all, Season 1 will most likely be on Blu by years end and it's a set I will buy.

Handbrake I heard is a great freeware with lots of codecs that are supported.

What models? You may have some file support. LG has had them playing most files since the BD370.

BTW, is this 'HBO Series' Game of Thrones? If so, you are in for treat. It's very very good!
