Knee Surgery

Anybody had knee surgery for a torn meniscus? How long did it take to recover?
I had a "displaced bucket handle tear" on the medial meniscus, a torn gastroc muscle and some bone bruising. Tomorrow is 2 weeks after surgery and about 9 weeks after injury. I still can't do a lot, but I'm scheduled to go back to work on Monday!

Hi Camron,
Sorry to hear about the knee injury. Sometimes they can take a while to heal. Have you done any PT or talked with the Dr about how long it's taking to heal? Sometimes the PT can hurt like hell but will help. Good luck recovering and Jeff is right about PT. Make sure to do your exercises and don't do too much to fast. It not worth over doing it and not healing properly.
To answer your original question, I have no idea how long that should take to recover, but luckily your MD should! -
Dr said full normal activity (depending on activity level of course) by about 4 weeks. Apparently, many people recover completely without any PT, so the decision on PT is made at the 6 week mark.

The younger one, probably around 55yo was struggling with recovery but was not doing any PT while the older man, approximately 65yo+ was recovering really well but was seriously doing his PT. IMHO, PT is crucial to prompt recovery after such an operation.
GL and lots of courage to you!

If the meniscus was removed, a 4-6 week recovery is expected. If it was repaired, there is a much different protocol. PT is a great idea but really the focus is regaining the strength that you lost due to the atrophy that occurred in the past 9 weeks since the injury and restoring full range of motion. Honestly, the pain in rehab is nowhere near the discomfort you had when your knee was injured. The bone bruise will be sore for awhile; i have seen the bone bruises last up to 4 months. But again that isn't something that you can rehab. Actually the best benefit of rehab will be the torn gastroc. At any rate, PT is a good idea. PM Meir you want more specific answers. I have worked in sports med for 15 years and frankly this is one of the most common surgeries that we deal with.Shawn

I had tore my ACL and my meniscus so my recovery was longer but was off crutches in a few weeks. My friend just had his meniscus repaired and almost fully recovered in 2 weeks. Do your PT that is the most important part.

PT is key, if you are not doing it now you should really talk to your Dr and get on a PT plan.

I had a bucket-handle tear of my meniscus and a small tear in my ACL fixed two years ago. As others have said, make sure you do the PT. It will speed your recovery. I was on crutches for about 2 weeks after the surgery. I was back riding the bike after about a month. Took about six months to get back to 100% normal for me, but that includes martial arts that stress the knee more than "normal" activities.

I believe you should be Muai Tuay kickboxing within a week from my personal experience of knowing nothing about this at all.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

a couple weeks ago I broke my leg (both bones below the kneee) had surgery feeling better daily , still I am slow and bed ridden , I think any quick recovery stems on eating enough sleeping enough and keeping blood circulation moving .

I have a torn MCL and other suspected damage in one of my knees, I have a feeling surgery is in my near future as it's not healing well."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. Following surgery,, keep the knee elevated and iced,,after a few days you.ll get bored abd wanna' move around,, use crutches,,,not one of those knee scooter-wheeley thingys,, suck it up and you should be off of em in a couple of weeks--had mine done last August,,I cannot stress enough,, the first few days post op are important,,,or you could follow Marks' suggestion,,and go the iron man route.JC approves....he told me so. Thanks for all the input (even the kickboxing ). Everybody seems to say the same thing...get some PT. Guess I'm missing the most important part of my recovery. Looks like I need to have a chat with the Dr.
