TRUE GRIT...Stevie quickie review

We bought the original True Grit (John Wayne) on BluRay, just to get back up to speed before watching the new True Grit.

The "new" True Grit:

They stuck almost precisely to the original story line, with probably even 85% of the lines being exactly the same. Jeff Bridges plays a harder edged Rooster Cogburn--showing more meanness than John Wayne. There's a few sequence changes in some scenes, but not many. The remake is well done, acting very good---but I still like the original slightly better. At any rate, an excellent movie, and if you are already a fan--you won't be disappointed.

Definitely Rent, possibly buy.

Is the original on blu-ray a definite buy recommendation?

If you're a fan, I'd buy it. The transfer, while not reference material, is done very well. I think it was $10 bucks at walmart.

NOTE: Target has a bunch of Blurays at $7.99 lately, of older movies.

I have not see the John Wayne version recently but did see the Coen bothers' version in the theater. I thought the Coen brothers' version was great.

According to interviews and reviews, it should not really be viewed as remake of the John Wayne version but a new take on the book. The Coen brothers' version is supposed to be much closer to the book.

Well, it's almost verbatim to the original. We watched them back-to-back. A few minor changes, but i don't want to spoil anything. See the original, you'll see what I mean.

I liked it, the story is just a great Western, hard to topple the Duke but certainly a rent or a buy. I went to a motion picture theater to see it, and will watch it on blu again in the ReelTime Theater...better sound quality....hehehe, well, at least in my opinion.

Watched this, twice. I rented it thinking I was not going to like it, heard it was a boring talkative Western. Boy, was I impressed. From the acting, to the films score, to the cinematography...all very well done. I've never seen the original and have no plans to, not a John Wayne fan at all.

My only grip, the last 10 minutes. Why oh why did the bros cheap out with the effects and shoot those final horse riding shots against a moving backdrop. Such a great film up until the end. Decisions like that makes no sense to me at all.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

No, I would not. John Wayne was a horrible, and I mean horrible drunk actor. Nothing good or redeeming about him as a person at all. I'll pass thank you very much.

Very glad to hear that I am not the only one that has this problem. I usually have the remote in my hand and turn it up and turn it down.

I find that with some movies if I run my center as large the audio is good.

Watched it the other night.....while certainly not a bad movie, it just didn't do anything for me.

Well, while I liked the new version, I frankly liked the original much more. I'm in the minority here, but I liked the acting, cinematography, musical score - pretty much everything - just flat out better in the original.

While we enjoyed the movie - thought Jeff Bridges was excellent, but the Matt Damon-acted ranger came across a bit lame, too contrived but about what you'd expect from the Coens.

We owe the film another viewing and will try to tune our expectations toward a more "cartoonish" Coen experience.

I saw it in the theaters and it was great. They definitely did the original one justice.

I was not surprised when it was nominated for 10 academy awards. It was best picture in my book and Jeff Bridges was definitely a serious contender for best actor.

Coen bothers could have done this great movie much better than they did. Jeff Bridges did a good 80% performance, Matt Damon should have been allowed to expand this character and make him more interesting and relevant. As Ron-P said, that scene at teh end of the ride to the store was horrible looking and truely unbelievable.

But, Jeff did a "pretty good" Rooster Cogburn.
