I'm a Dire Straits fan and decided that I'd check out some Mark Knopfler stuff, do a quick search on Amazon and wow this guys has a bunch of albums.

I think I like Sailing to Philadelphia, but want to see what you guys would recommend.

There are two things I'm looking for, something that's recorded well and something similar to the Dire Straits sound. I know he has gone in many directions with his sound and for now I'd like to stick with what I know I like with the DS sound.

So, what would you guys suggest?

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - Real Live Roadrunning

    B000I5X810.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37928325_.jpg

This is a CD/DVD set. The DVD is excellent. Knopfler doesn't run and jump around the stage, he simply plays and sings, captivating the audience. He and Emmylou are a wonderful combination that complement each other very well. This album is considered country I guess, because of Emmylou and some of the muscians, but don't let that stop you from picking this up if you like Knopfler.

If you want to hear something a little different, check out this recording he did with Chet Atkins. It really shows what a virtuoso Knopfler is on guitar.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

oh ok:tongue:...sailing to philadelphia is the high water mark, imho...it's my reference recording..

goldenheart is a great listen, as well...the dvd from that time is awesome:cool: mk live in london, i think

ragpicker dream....for some reason reminds me of john barleycorn must die..ymmv

    shangri-la...highly regarded for good reason...

    i think i missed 2 or 3, which i have...i'm at work now, tho

i like mk's solo stuff better than later dire straits stuff...i thought bros in arms was great, but way over-produced...the solo stuff is pared down alot more, with ragpicker the most..

go get you some mk and let us know!

Well recorded, but for me,the music wasn't to my taste....and I'm a Knopfler fan too. A tad too country for me. I did appreciate how well their voices gelled together though.

I'm sure you know this cd but this particular version is the best I have heard bar none. Not that common so you will have to search around for it. The Best Of Private Investigations SHM-CD.
    Everything matters. That is all.

I have to go with Shangra La on SACD.
Second..it is All The Roadrunning with Emmylou.
Personally, I think Shangra La is his best work ever..including the Dire Straits albums.

Wow I must be in the minority here. I much prefer ragpickers dream to shangri-la. Also, can't stand Emmy Lou Harris voice on All the Roads.

I just enjoy the things he does musically without getting too hung up on dislikes..I got a button on my remote that I hit if I dont want to listen to a particular tune in the moment. While traveling I have found back catalogue can reveal some jewels.

There are a number of them on the Ragpickers Dream as mentioned. As always have fun swirling orange soda on the ride and watch out for sharp edges.

Here is a video off the "Real Live Roadrunning" DVD. "Song For Sonny Liston" (also on the "Shangri-La" album). This cut alone is worth the price of the CD/DVD IMO.
