Looking for SDA SRS 1.2 service shop

One of my less computer savvy friends has owned a pair SDA SRS 1.2 speakers from new. They have been used so little I'm sure they haven't even been broken in yet as they don't get used from one year to the next. I haven't heard them in about 20 years. Anyway, almost from new he has had some distortion emanating from one or more tweeters. I've never heard it, but he said it sounds like a crackling noise. I was going to help him diagnose and hopefully repair the problem, but he just doesn't have time to deal with it due to other interests and work.

He has asked me to help him find someone that can service them for him. I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone in the Greater Toronto Area or southern Ontario that works on these speakers. He lives about 1 hour drive NE of Toronto. He may consider driving to Upstate NY if that's the best option. He is very fussy about his equipment so wants them repaired properly by qualified personnel. He has all the original packaging, so transportation won't be a problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what specific qualifications your friend is seeking, since "authorized Polk speaker repairman" is not a cert I've seen hanging on a lot of walls. I also am forced to question the judgement of anyone who "is very fussy about his equipment" but has left distortion unfixed for somewhere near 20 years (you said you'd never heard it, but that it existed "almost from new".)

I'd also trust (hope?) that the speakers have been tried with other AVRs/Amps/etc. to ensure that the problem really is in the speakers...

That being said, I'd start by looking at
    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/57365-6-refoaming-speakers-toronto
    and
    http://audiohardware.ca/
as starting points. I'd also consider changing the thread title (or starting a new one if it can't be changed) to "Looking for Polk SDA speaker service in Toronto/Upstate NY" since that is really what it appears you're seeking.

Good luck--I'm fortunate enough to live 20 minutes south of Baltimore, and when I Google for "audio speaker repair baltimore" the first and sixth links are to Polk Audio...
    Current polk speakers:
    Family room 5.1: TC265i R/L, VM10 Center, RC65i surrounds (couldn't match the TCs)
Basement non-dedicated 7.1 HT: SDA-CRS+ R/L, 255c-LS Center, LSiFX surrounds, RC80i in-ceiling rear surround, plus Wharfedale 12" sub (some day I'll get around to building 15" F-20 sub).

If you do come to Upstate, NY I may be able to help you out but I would think there would be someone closer for your convenience. Its a big speaker to lug around so you should be able to find a local shop to help you out.

The first place that comes to mind in Upstate, NY is Audio Classics. http://www.audioclassics.com/
About an hour from me and great people to deal with for sure.

    Good Luck!

I should have asked this before but how does he have them hooked up? one amp using the jumpers? Two amps in some fashion? I only ask because it could simply be a bad connection somewhere possibly at the binding posts on the back of the speakers or at the amp/amps.

In my experience with this kind of problem its always been a bad connection of some sort.

He should isolate the issue first. Is he 100% sure it's the speakers and nothing else? Try this, if you will. Have him switch the L & R speaker wires [cables] at the amp. When he does this, ask him if the issue is in the same speaker and then get back to us please.
