Building a deck and patio roof...

I started this project in March, tearing down the old deck and gazebo and working between bad weather, well we have had some really good weather and I have been busting my **** getting this done. It's night and day with the improvments but I would never do it again (pay someone) as fun as it's been I just couldn't think of doing it again. I cut, drilled, bolted, stained,(and I will be putting on the shingles this weekend) all by my self. It's alot of work for one guy to do.

On a good note I just ordered the most important things for my new deck!! Polk Atrium 65 SDI WHITE Outdoor Speakers coming my way..

I did end up using Varenda for the top of my deck. I got a killer deal on it from Home Depot. My deck is 16' x 24' and I have about $2500 in materials, not bad at all, I am building my own hand rails at the shop as well. I have about $1200 in the patio roof so far..

I really don't think I could have had the deck done for less then 5k had I paid someone to come in and do it, let alone the cost of removing the old deck and gazebo (it was bad) the people that lived here before us did a shabby job and never really took care of it. I spent alot of time trying to save it every year, and this year we just bit the bullet and tore it down.

It is really nice having a patio roof over the deck this time as well, I even put in a fire pit in the back yard as well..

That is all, I will post some pics later on even before and after!!

I know that was a lot of hard work and it seemed like a never ending project. Since you did the construction, it will be better built and last a lot longer than if you had paid someone to do it. I know you busted your but as the shed and deck I started in October is just barely getting finished now.

Not to be downer, but around here, permits are required for any free standing roof structure (pergolas aren't considered roofs) and decks that are over 30" tall. While the deck might not be a big deal (they usually just want to check footers and bracing) you might want to make sure that the roof adheres to code, even if you don't get it inspected. I say this mainly for insurance purposes and if you ever sell your house.

Congratulations and looking forward to the pics. :-)

A friend of mine did something very similar to what you've been up to TOOL and he paid near 8k. He nearly choked, but couldn't do it himself and wanted it done.

So for around 3k you are doing pretty good I'd say!

Nice! Love the synthetic stuff too. My only issue with them is they get extremely hot when it by the sun.

Nothing beat a DIY project that you are proud of.

vlam I think it really depends on the color. I have a buddy with the brown colored trex and one with the lighter tone that Tool has, and must say the lighter tone stuff isn't nearly as bad.

Looking good! Those are fun times, I did a little backyard restoration last fall when my dad was in town. He has his own house construction business back in Finland, I don't think I could have managed without some professional help.

Very impressive work guys. You don't make house-calls, do you? I have a garage in need of serious repair and painting and if we wait for 'me' to do it--well, have you ever seen what happened to the structures in the Time Machine as our hero zipped into the future!

    Yeah...that's coming!

On another note, in order to prove to my neighbor, who has a monster Ron Paul for Pres billboard on his property, that I was more of an "Individual" than he or his ilk, I got out my weed-whacker and used it to cut the grass on my front lawn. I call it Home Owner Humor!! I was probably humming a tune about wanting to win the Bad Housekeeping Seal of Approval while I was whacking and laughing?

I suppose you can say that I may have achieved the gold standard of lawn mowing there! lol

Nice job on the pool, and I'm drooling about the sauna. The old joke from Northern Minnesota was that if you had four or more I's in your last name, you had a sauna for sure.

Congrats on a job well done.
