What preamps are you guys using with your TFM's that you've had success with? What hasn't worked for you?

My TFM-45 came back from repair yesterday. I'm using an old Marantz 2245 as a pre and I think it's the weak link (although when using the amp section and pre together on the 2245 it's just marvelous )

I run my 2.3TL's with the TFM-55. I rotate a C-1, C-11, Phase Linear 3000 series 2, a Yamaha C-4, and right now using a vintage Grommes 214 tuber. Mostly use the C-1 and C-11 for headphone duty.

I take it the C-1 isn't all it's hyped up to be?

One in good condition pairs well with the TFMs.

I wouldn't dare adding crap like that to the signal. What's next, adding more chorus effect to Zepplin?

FYI....that "crap", as you put it, is virtually identical in it's effect as the SDA "crap", they both sound great, just not at the same time.Sheesh, maybe you should do some more research before tossing out such uncomplimentary terms. The more I think about it, you just might be an Adcom person.

Nope, not at all, just sayin you don't know what you are typing about. One day you are soliciting advice & info about Carver gear.......the next you are flappin your jaws like you know everything there is to know about it. Kind of funny, yet, a little sad too. Calm down, no need to impress.

Stating that I think sonic holography sounds like crap is somehow giving you the idea that I think I know everything? Really? What's up with the hostility? Maybe you feel entitled to throwing your attitude around at newcomers because you have an outrageous post count? If you feel like I'm threatening Carver by saying I don't like something of his, I'll front half the bill to get you counseling.

Anyway, you're derailing the thread with your overly sensitive assumptions. Don't let your dress get caught in the door on the way out.

I'll let you know, when I get my Carver back from referb next week, but my Anthem pre is working very nicely with my Rotel at them momment. It was a big improvement over using my Pioneer elite avr as a pre.

I'm looking forward to hearing how it pairs, Reno. How much did that anthem pre run you?

Being on topic......I think you'd really like a Carver C-19 tube pre, it matches the TFM appearance. They're kinda rare & expensive tho. OH Yeah.....no SH on that model either.

If the C-19 is a no-go, the C-11 & C-16 have the same basic looks but, they both incorporate SH too.

To be honest - I haven't heard a preamp make my SDA 1C's (When I had them) sound bad. I had an Adcom something, a Carver C1 for a while, a cheap tube preamp (Xiang Sheng or something like that), and the tube pre I have now I was able to try on the SDA's before getting my Sony's. All sounded either good - great. I think Good speakers can make up for some not perfect electronics. I, however, cannot speak to the best matches because I haven't listened to enough of them.

Moot - as he already sold the Carver to make room for Emo. But I assume the question still stands as he's going to need a pre.

He did have the TFM45 for a couple days before he sold it.

I have a C-6, C-19 and a Sunfire Classic preamp that I swap in and out. The C-6 is a silver faced C-16 and I have a C-9 to run with the Sunfire and C-19 for SH.

I have also had a C-1 and a C-11 and a C-5. They are all good preamps IMO.
