What would you keep?

Hi, I'm not exactly new to this forum but haven't posted in a while. As my old email was discontinued and I couldn't locate my password, I had to re-register. Good to be back. Anyway, I just thought I would post a question here to see what replies I would get. I own the following:

SDA CRS's (very efficient and I won't part with these). These have the single tweeters.

SDA2's. Bigger and more bass but I wonder if they are really any better than my SDA CRS's (anyone else feel this way?). These are the latest version with one tweeter in each enclosure.

SDA1's. Big and I mean big for my medium size apartment. They do appear to be smoother than my SDA CRS's but do require more power. They appear to have the same bass response as the SDA2's. Again, these are the latest version with two vertical tweeters.

I suppose it comes down to parting with either the SDA2's or the SDA1's.

Anyway, just curious if others own, or have owned, this same array of SDA's and what your feelings and thoughts are on this. Thanks.

If I had to choose between late model SDA1's or 2's, I would go with keeping the 1's. They take up exactly the same floor space, so your not losing anything there. The 1 goes deeper in the bass department - so when you move out of your apartment, you will have all that low end to take advantage of.

Actually, I was thinking along those lines as well. The SDA1's are about 44 inches tall and the SDA2's are 39 inches, with the same width and depth. Not too much difference between them in height. And as I said, after all the evolutionary changes of the SDA2's, they simply appear to be nothing more than a floor standing version of the CRS's. I presume they also have the same wiring as well.

However, I am wondering about the wiring of the SDA1's though. They have two drivers each and then the two "reflecting" or canceling speakers, (sorry, I'm trying to remember how Polk describes or names them). I am wondering if the two drivers, for example, in each speaker, or the two canceling speakers, have separate individual wiring i.e., each having a different coil or coils, or are they wired in parallel? Wondering about the two tweeters in each as well.

    Thanks again.

You say the 1s are the "latest version". That'd make them 1Cs. Very desirable. Do keep in mind that the 1B also has the vertically-stacked tweeters. A difference between the 1B and the 1C would be blade/blade vs. pin/blade interconnect cable--although there may have been a few "Frankenpolks" made that blurred that distinction.

Either 1B or 1C use all four midwoofers for the bass; but the outer two drivers on each side do double-duty as the "dimensional" drivers for the SDA effect.

You can see the wiring schematics by downloading the appropriate .pdf documents available on this site.

I agree with everyone above. The 1 and the CSRs. But I don't think that the SDA 2s are merely a floorstanding version of the CSR+. Even you note the 'greater' bass that they can put out. Basically, the CSR is a nice bookshelf that can put out a good range of sound. But it's not going to have the low end of a full size speaker. Certainly the 1Cs are the preferred speaker around here, but the 2's don't get the respect they deserve because they can do most of the things their bigger brothers can in a smaller room? And do it almost as well.

    Good Luck.

LMAO It probably wouldn't be so funny if it wasn't true!

Regarding which ones I'd keep, my answer would be all of them. But seriously, if the 1's are 1C's, then I'd say keep those along with the CRS's. The 1C's are an outstanding speaker. Although, as cnh pointed out, you could do a lot worse than a nice set of 2B's.

Post some pictures if you need help determining the exact models...

I am going to try to keep them all. I have two pair of CRS's, the single tweeter models. They're probably the best speakers I have. It's unbelievable how they sound at even the lowest volume. I currently have one pair hooked up along with the SDA1's. Actually, the CRS's are on top of the SDA1's. By the way, the SDA1's are the blade/pin connector so I think this makes them the latest version? I will certainly try to put some pictures of them here soon.

However, I think the problem is the power needed to really bring the larger speakers to their full potential. In this regard, my CRS's are the speakers I listen to most as I really can't crank my receiver up to it's full potential.

But I will say one thing. When there's a great piece of music playing, when I switch between the CRS's and SDA1's, it's like going from 5 rows back to literally feeling like you're on the stage.

If your CRS's are the "+" model,pin/blade i/c ,one tweeter as you state, there is a 4.1 TL upgrade that you can perform for a reasonable cost. This "upgrade" will take the CRS+'s to a whole new level.
