Braided speaker wires.

Hey forum.

Questions again.

First and simple, is there any mathmatical forumula to calculate the AWG of braided wire.

IE, 10awg braided with 10awg= 5awg? or 16+16Awg= 8AWG?

next, i have once heard that brading your wire helps to reduce interference, is this true? or at least generally true? ( i noticed lots of heat involved with wire discussions)

How should a guy braid, braid the positive with positive or should it be mixed with the negative wire?

the reasons i ask is i was thinking to make some neato organized cable runs like you folks, with the bi-wire +- in one neat little plastic skin thus cleaning up the back of the AVR.

speaking of the above should i separate the runs? you know, one black snake is - and the other black snake is +?

Your thoughts and experience is needed.

Gauge follows a logarithmic scale. 2 14ga wires together actually result in the equivalent of an 11ga wire. Think of gauge as circles.....2 4 inch pipes flow less than 1 8 inch pipe.

Braiding is generally used in lower voltage wiring as a way of creating a natural electrical field that rejects noise. This helps in computer wiring (Cat5), microphone, and line level wiring the most. Speaker wiring doesn't really require braiding since the higher voltages are more immune to outside electrical noises, though some brands use it in their designs. The braiding of many smaller wires to create a larger gauge itself does have some benefits such as strength and flexibility over the same gauge of solid wire.

    Wonderful stuff thus far.

    thank you Dennis

I am looking into this matter more and more.

i have found and learned about the logarithm of AWG.

what i have found is that it is a factor of 3, when the same gauge wire is paired together.

so 2 strands of 10awg is equivalent to 7 awg.

or 2 strands of 16 would be 13 awg.

the article said something technical about the gauge and the diameter of the cable, i can explain it but here is the quote in layman terms

"The wire gauge is a logarithmic scale base on the cross sectional area of the wire. Each 3-gauge
step in size corresponds to a doubling or halving of the cross sectional area. For example, going
from 20 gauge to 17 gauge doubles the cross sectional area (which, by the way, halves the DC
    resistance).
So, one simple result of this is that if you take two strands the same gauge, it's the equivalent of a
single wire that's 3 gauges lower. So two 20 gauge strands is equivaent to 1 17 gauge."

sound legit to you? let me know any discrepancies you guys feel in this.

The 3 gauge difference in the doubling is the old PI = 3.1416...... remember that? It is the factor applied to the diameter to get the outside circumference, so the 3 difference is PI rounded down. If I understand correctly.

Similar problem with Bo. She had a size 12 top with only size 6 bottom. Most likely had little to do with PI though.

    Lulz.

    Bo derek. funny.

and looking at the awg in that respective yes. it makes more sense.

i haven't played with pi since high school. ahhh the good ole days.
