If you knew nothing about the movie, the cast or the storyline, but a movie you'd want to see, just cause "X" directed it.

3 way tie for me : David Lynch, Christopher Nolan and John Huston.

Tarantino comes in a close, close second.

Ok, I like "Noir" movies.

Could never get this theme out of my head....

Darren Aronofsky and Tim Burton. Can't really decide between the two.

    Honorable mention: Danny Boyle

I know you probably intended to discuss current directors, but I love John Ford's films.

I think most directors you name today were strongly influenced by his body of work.

Any reason you feel John Fords work influenced the directors mentioned? Considering John Ford had a specific genre that none of these directors are known for...

Very hard to say. The movies I seem to have had the most impact and enjoyment from recently, are films from Steven Soderbergh.

Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience come to mind as well as Sex, Lies and Videotape, Full Frontal and The Informant.

I would never say he's my all time favorite, but he's right up there.

I like Clint Eastwood and Stanley Kubrick too. How about Rob Reiner - A Few good Men, This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride.

Of course, everyone learned how to build suspense and drama from Alfred Hitchcock.

Definitely my top three Soderbergh movies.

Traffic was obviously big budget and a great movie. I haven't seen The Underneath yet, added it to my Netflix queue.

Bubble is the kind of movie I've been gravitating towards lately. Stark, off the wall, little to no effects, low budget. A few character's, etc. Don't get me wrong I love all the slick, big budget stuff too, but I get tired of it.

Last 6 movies I watched that I really enjoyed (not by Soderbergh).

    The Snake
    Somersault
    Down In The Valley
    Hard Candy
    The Station Agent
    Quench
    The King of California
    Mr. Foe

Mostly indie films on a low budget with dark characters.

Well one current director high on the list is Clint Eastwood, and I would basically "feel John Ford's work influenced" him because they are his own words . . . http://www.dga.org/en/Events/2011/06-june-2011/Clint-Eastwood-on-John-Fords-Stagecoach.aspx

I also get the feeling Lynch might have been watching some Ford classics when he talks about Cinema a paragraph or so in at http://iishmael.com/?p=2189

There were similarities between Ford and Huston, although perhaps coincidental but there nevertheless, as seen at http://www.eskimo.com/~noir/directors/huston/index.shtml

Arguing over who the best director is like arguing if cables makes a difference. It is all in the perception of the viewer.

Ford, Eastwood, Scorsese etc... They are all good.

I think it would be easier to ask who is the worst director.

Given this description, it doesn't necessarily mean my favorite director. I would go see any Ridley Scott directed movie. Over the years he has directed some of my favorite movies. Some might not think they are the best movies but they are certainly entertaining.
