If you knew nothing about the movie, the cast or the storyline, but a movie you'd want to see, just cause "X" directed it.
3 way tie for me : David Lynch, Christopher Nolan and John Huston.
Tarantino comes in a close, close second.
Ok, I like "Noir" movies.

Did you watch this series? I remember the weekly episode would hit my video library every sun morn.
Could never get this theme out of my head....

I like(d) the two Stanleys a lot:
Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kramer -
Darren Aronofsky and Tim Burton. Can't really decide between the two.
Honorable mention: Danny BoyleI never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -

I know you probably intended to discuss current directors, but I love John Ford's films.

3. Ordinary People ....For those of you who are old enough to have seen this 1980 release.
4. Quiz Show...... -

Any reason you feel John Fords work influenced the directors mentioned? Considering John Ford had a specific genre that none of these directors are known for... -
They are both great movies IMO, but I have got to go with Unforgiven here. It is one of my all time favorites, no doubt about it...
Funny how the best movies always question your line dividing right from wrong. -
TarantinoIf you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

Very hard to say. The movies I seem to have had the most impact and enjoyment from recently, are films from Steven Soderbergh.
Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience come to mind as well as Sex, Lies and Videotape, Full Frontal and The Informant.
I would never say he's my all time favorite, but he's right up there.

Tarantino
Ok Choose from my fav Tarantino flicks:
1. Reservoir Dogs
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Kill Bill
4. Inglorious ****
If I had to go with one, it would be between 1 and 2. -
Tim Burton!
Hopefully, he'll get the crack at doing Pirates of the Caribbean #5.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -
I like Clint Eastwood and Stanley Kubrick too. How about Rob Reiner - A Few good Men, This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride.
Of course, everyone learned how to build suspense and drama from Alfred Hitchcock. -

1. Traffic
2. Sex Lies and Videotape
3. The Underneath
Definitely my top three Soderbergh movies. -
Traffic was obviously big budget and a great movie. I haven't seen The Underneath yet, added it to my Netflix queue.
Bubble is the kind of movie I've been gravitating towards lately. Stark, off the wall, little to no effects, low budget. A few character's, etc. Don't get me wrong I love all the slick, big budget stuff too, but I get tired of it.
Last 6 movies I watched that I really enjoyed (not by Soderbergh).
The Snake
Somersault
Down In The Valley
Hard Candy
The Station Agent
Quench
The King of California
Mr. Foe
Mostly indie films on a low budget with dark characters.

toss up between:
Martin Scorsese
Clint Eastwood -
1. Tarantino
2. Kubrick
3. Ron Howard -
3. Ron Howard
1. Cocoon
2. A Beautiful Mind
3. Da Vinci Code
'2' takes precedence over his entire body of work. -
Is 3 supposed to be an example of a GOOD movie he made? Cuz... Da Vinci code... not really that good. How about Apollo 13?If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
-
Tarantino
--- True Romance --- My all time fav. -

Well one current director high on the list is Clint Eastwood, and I would basically "feel John Ford's work influenced" him because they are his own words . . . http://www.dga.org/en/Events/2011/06-june-2011/Clint-Eastwood-on-John-Fords-Stagecoach.aspx
I also get the feeling Lynch might have been watching some Ford classics when he talks about Cinema a paragraph or so in at http://iishmael.com/?p=2189
There were similarities between Ford and Huston, although perhaps coincidental but there nevertheless, as seen at http://www.eskimo.com/~noir/directors/huston/index.shtmlVTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

Arguing over who the best director is like arguing if cables makes a difference. It is all in the perception of the viewer.
Ford, Eastwood, Scorsese etc... They are all good.
I think it would be easier to ask who is the worst director. -
even the first post at http://www.tarantino.info/community/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1171 suggests a link between John Ford and Quentin Tarantino.

Cohen brothers,Not an Audiophile, just a dude who loves music, and decent gear to hear it with.

There are a few, but David Fincher would be my favorite modern day director. He's had a few turds, but some of my favorite movies are Fincher flicks.
-

Given this description, it doesn't necessarily mean my favorite director. I would go see any Ridley Scott directed movie. Over the years he has directed some of my favorite movies. Some might not think they are the best movies but they are certainly entertaining.
ScottWithout music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid. ..... Frank Zappa -

Didn't mean to question your original post. Was only looking for an explanation, that your links provided.
