Maybe I'm dumb, but Civial Rockets suck...

So I was watching the Science Channel tonight and they had the "Large Dangerous Rocket Ship" show.

In an admitted area of ignorance, it sure seemed to me that the materials they were using were pretty damn 19th century. If some punk kids can make stereo system enclosures with carbon fiber laminates and you are using wood and cardboard on machines that can go a few thousand feet (minimum) into the atmosphere and reach near supersonic speeds with said 19th century materials, besides really lame rules, why aren't these guys "layin' the wood," so to speak, with advanced materials etc.?

Plus, none of these guys were reaching supersonic velocities. Are we stuck in the 1940's in civilian rocketry???
