Hey guys,

I have a question about my wireless network/Router. I am to my whits end on this one.

So here is the deal. I have a Belkin wireless N router, The internet access is interminate, It is so random that it will just stop working at anytime. My computer/other devices will stay connected to the router but the computer will say no internet access, or will say that i am connected with internet access and I will have none.

Again it is completely random, whenever i have this problem i will reset the router and it usually works, (sometimes it will take a few times of reseting the router). I have tried to change the SSID channels to make sure i dont have any interference, with the same result.

I have downloaded a program called INSSIDER that allows you to see all the other networks that you can pick up with your wireless device and you can see what channel they are running on. I have found that my router isnt even close (on channels) to any other device....so i am guessing that it isnt an interference issue, but i could be wrong.

I am so frustrated at this point i cant hardly think straight. This issue has been ongoing for several months and i have no idea. I have had the communications co. out to look at it and all they do is reset the router and then i have the same problem again.

Any ideas/suggestions would be great.

Well there are a lot of possibilities of what your problem might be. When you say that you reset the router, what do you mean. Do you pull the power from the back for 1-2 minutes or do you do a hard reset and take the router back to factory settings? How are you connecting to the net dsl or cable internet connection? Have you reset the cable or dsl modum? have you called your isp as it may have been the source of your problems and finally have you changed the network cable between you modum and router?

One final thought, have you tried another router?

I have done all three reset options, Just pushed the button on the back, unplugged for several hours, and have done a factory reset under the 192.168....... I have a Hp g72 on

My os is windows 7 home premium, but i have the same exact issue with other devices and guest computers on the network.

My service is a local telephone co. They have fiber to the home and use a cat5 system for internet and cable. I have a modem/switch that must split the cable and internet, Because the switch feeds my cable box and then feeds my router. I dont think i am having signal issues from the phone co, because i can get cable picture and can direct plug my computer and xbox into the switch/router and have no internet connectivity issues.

    Hope i was clear

Sorry the phone co. system used fiber to the home and then they feed cat5 to the modem/switch, then each cable box is wired to the switch, with one cat5 to the router for internet.

Have you checked on dsl reports for your isp to see what routers they recommend? Sometimes with fiber connects routers will have issues and/or limitations. I am assuming you have a 50 or 100 meg internet connection.

Also...you may want to get someone over from your isp to check the potts splitter.

jaritta, IMHO you haven't given us enough info to help you through all the troubleshooting steps--in particular, what Belkin Wireless N router (by model number) do you own?

    A few other suggestions:
    1. Try to borrow a friend's wireless router to test with, or buy another one at a Big Box store with a good return policy to test with, or if all else fails PM me an address and I think I have extra 802.11g and 802.11n routers sitting around here due to upgrade-itis.

    2. Have you plugged a computer directly into the "hard line" ethernet ports on the wireless router when you're having these issues? If you use a laptop over wireless normally, and then plug into ethernet, you may need to disable the wireless in order to force the connection to go over the wired ethernet. The purpose of this step is to rule out any flakiness or issues with the main Telco/Cable Customer Premises Equipment (CPE).

    3. In my experience, if you've got wireless working well otherwise, your OS and cable provider should have little to do with any issues. However, there can be some very strange issues that might trace to an OS or a provider...I had a Dell 802.11g wireless router that worked fine with every computer and smart phone in my house except...a Dell laptop. When V* convinced me to move to FiOS and I replaced that router with a FiOS 802.11n router, the new one works fine with everything in the house except the MacBook that my wife's school provided.

If you're still having these sorts of issues, then see 1 and 2 above, please report back on what model your existing router is, and let me know if you need some help in trying an alternative router.

(I've been using computers for over 30 years, my degree is in electrical engineering and I do computer security for a living. I might know a few things about computers and wireless. However, at best all I can say is good luck and I'll try to help.)
    Current polk speakers:
    Family room 5.1: TC265i R/L, VM10 Center, RC65i surrounds (couldn't match the TCs)
Basement non-dedicated 7.1 HT: SDA-CRS+ R/L, 255c-LS Center, LSiFX surrounds, RC80i in-ceiling rear surround, plus Wharfedale 12" sub (some day I'll get around to building 15" F-20 sub).

How much have you "configured" the router?? Are you trying to use the DDNS service on the router? Port forwarding?? Firewall, are you using a mixed broadcast, or strictly N signal??
I am just trying to determine how you have configured the router. If you have simply setup the router with your ISP info (username and password) then there are alot less possibilities as to what the problem is. What type of devices are you using (simply computers??). When one device losses internet connectivity do all the others...

If possible check the manufacturer's website for a firmware uprgrade.
Wireless can be a bit of a pain...

Thanks for all the help guys,

I will try to answer as many of your questions as i can.

The Belkin modle number is f5d8236-4 v1

I have another linksys router and I have had no luck getting it going at all. I replaced it with the N just thinking that the Router may be the issue.

I have plugged the computer into the switch and the router, each time i turned off my wireless via the wireless switch on my keyboard.

When i have this problem it isnt just the wireless, the wired connections into the router stop working also. I have a xbox on the router and It will not log into xbox live when i am having the same connectivity problems with my computer

Thanks for the offer to possibly send me a router CNWDI I may take you up on that...but i would like to exhause every possibility before i do that....and i am not above buying a new router.

As far as how much i have configured the router.....some but not much. I have changed the ssid channels, Secured the wireless connection by wep2 personal.

I am not useing the ddns...what is it and should i?

My connection type is Dynamic..i was told by my isp that this is what i should use...i think.

Firewall- can you tell me exactly what you are looking for, my router has several settings under firewall heading. I havent changed anything under any of these sub catergories.

My wireless mode is b&g&n all three i think, is this what you mean by what i am broadcasting??

I beleive that the splitter is good because whenever i hardwire any device to it regardless of what it is it works.

    Hmmmmm.
Are you able to goto the manufacturers website and get a driver/firmware update??. Is this router new (warranty)??

    Try this..

Hard reset the router just in case some settings are screwed up. Hard wire your PC into Lan port 1-4. Open command prompt in Windows. Click start, type in CMD. From there in the command prompt type in ipconfig. Write down the default gateway. Open Explorer, type the default gateway into the browser's address bar. You should now be at the Belkin page. Go into setup, internet setup and set it to Dynamic IP (DHCP).

From there you can setup the wireless, I would only enable b,g&n modes. Set bandwidth to 20/40hz. SSID to whatever you wish to name your wireless. From there you should be able to setup your WiFi protected mode.

Make sure to save and exit, check your settings afterward also. I would also advise, updating router firmware if available. Once all setup, run a lan cable from switch port to the wan port of the router. From there you should be good.

    Here's your manual

would wep2 peresonal have any affect on this issue.....i like the idea of having a password rather than a pin, but does it affect performance or could it cause the issue i described????
