receiver choice for monitor 60s,cs2

I currently have a onkyo ht-r540 from a onkyo htib, I have the opportunity to get a marantz nr1601 cheap.
my speakers are monitor 60s,cs2,&r300 for rears.
I feel like at times my center possibily clipping when I watch movies, and I live in an apartment so I never really get turn up the bass or to really turn up volume.
other then the gain of having hdmi will the marantz be much of an improvement over the onkyo. will it have a fuller sound for home theatre?
does the marantz at 50wpc have more power than the onkyo htib receiver rated at 130wpc. I know they are rated at different freq ranges and onkyo is very over rated but I'm not sure how they compare.
