Portable speaker for THUNDEROUS parties?!

My borther throws a lot of parties where he DJ's. He currently has an adcom 555 and Bose 301s and a mixer that he uses which he says does a good job but when he uses his mixer and pushes lots of bass through the speakers it seems to make the adcom "overload" light come on, and also during the last party he saw a "light" from the ports of the bose 301 speakers themselves  (crossover busning up?), followed by a scent of burning plastic...
So evidently he abuses the living heck out of this setup and it's not really holding up too well. So he wants to get a speaker that would be:
1)portable-ish (he drives around in a corola, college kid )
2)able to handle the abuse
3)able to fill the room like the bose does.
This is primarily for techno/rap/pop music. This is not for big dj-ing events, this is purely for fun house parties on college campus.
I can't think of anything in the polk line-up that would fit the bill here. I might let him borrow the m70s and the parasound 1500a to see how it holds up, but havent decided...
Maybe something from Klipsch would be a good idea for him or some other brand?
He's not looking for clearity here, just strong/jarring sound and bass that will make you dissy and really feel the music, lol!

Dude...
Pro Audio...
Crown, QSC, Electrovoice
Google them. 130 db - boom boom, all that- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I know when I have a party I hide my logans in the spare bedroom

Man, you are generous for even thinking about that. Crazy but generous. I'd just find a used pair of Cerwin Vega's for him.
well, maybe blind faith really... I'm thinking if the m70's are powered right, which should be the case with the parasound 1500a, then hopefully... what could go wrong, right?!
I would actually like to know... cuz I never push my gear to it's limits, so I just don't know. I get the feeling the mixer is what really pushes gear through a good workout... volume too, i'm sure!Vr3MxStyler2k3 wrote: »Dude...

LOL! I will have to look into those, appreciate the suggestions!
Any amp ideas? or will the adcom handle the speakers you suggested...polkfarmboy wrote: »I know when I have a party I hide my logans in the spare bedroomLiving Room 7.1 HT Rig:

Also Look into to the Polk hit-master. I heard one and was pretty impressed with it. I can imagine that a few of them would rock pretty good.Front - RTiA5's
Rear - RTiA3's
Center - CSiA4
Sub - PSW110 -

yeah, $40 at walmart... that would be good to try. I'll have to tell him about the hitmaster too.Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

anyone have a clue on what the light coming out of the bass port on the bose 301 was? I'd be interested to know if anyone has seen that before. Burning crossover or something else?Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

It was the Bose burning up. Don't be crazy and let him break your Polk's too. He needs to learn restraint before that.
Tell your Bro to take it easy. 301's aren't boom boom speakers. Cerwin Vega, And just about anything Pro audio would do better. Tell him to look at NADY pro audio. It's real cheap and will boom boom better than the 301's ever could.. -
For cheaper$ .behringer powered speakers or american DJ powered speakers or harbinger. Built in amps, built in limiters, no extra gear to carry. Just plug the board directly into the speakers.
If they want to get into somethig a little better look for a used set of jbl powered eon. Light weight with a good kick and again built in amps.
For my rig, I have RCF tops with KV2 bottoms. For my bigger system I am using electrovoice zx5A tops with the same kv2 bottoms.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's. -
As said, you need some PA type speakers like the MTX-12" that are occasionally for sale at BB, or some CVega 12" or 15" and a Pro-amp. No one cares about sound quality when you're trying to fill a dance floor with brilliant highs and thumping bass!
A Crown amp, Pyle, or whatever should provide gobs of power and SPL but not much 'refinement'.

Wait.....your saying Bose isnt good ......"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963)

Good input guys, I really appreciate it! I will send him this thread via e-mail and tell him to look into all this(i'm getting pretty tied up at work here). I'm sure he will find it very useful.
It's funny that cnh mentions the MTXs because that's the first thing I thought of. Cheap and really punchy!
As for BOSE not being the best... well... according to my bro they did an awesome job, until they started smoking...
Best part for him is he works for BB, so he can get discounts on most gear.
I think I will stick with the concensus here and NOT let him borrow my m70s w/ the 1500A. I get the feeling they might not sound the same after one of his parties. Glad y'all chimed in on that, and pointed out, what should have been: the obvious :redface:Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

I understand you want to help out your Bro but sometimes you need to look out for numero uno.

Hey man, if music purity and accuracy, are no issue, I highly recomend Cerwin Vega,, They were made for 2 Things,, big Bass, and full blown partying,,, Get a good used pair, and you well be set, ive had 2 pairs, when i was younger,,, There the best for partys, Bose arent party speakers, as a matter of fact, i cant find nothing good to say about them,,, Great marketing scam,, thats about it, Get the Vegas,, thank me latter. Not an Audiophile, just a dude who loves music, and decent gear to hear it with.

Another party speaker to look at is the Infinity SM series. They can usually be had very cheap. Like the SM152.--Gary--
Onkyo Integra M504, Bottlehead Foreplay III, Denon SACD, Thiel CS2.3, NHT VT-2, VT-3 and Evolution T6, Infinity RSIIIa, SDA1C and a few dozen other speakers around the house I change in and out. -
It's not that we are voting for Cerwin Vega's as much as they are fine for beating up.
I would never subject my SDA's to a House Party with the bass turned up to 11 and the volume knob twisted till it broke. Could they handle it? Probably but why would I do that when you could get some cheap threeway's of Craigslist with a 15" woofer to beat on.
At the volume and venue were talking about, it's not sound quality it's about quantity.
I would still vote for Pro Audio speakers. They are designed more for the use/abuse he is dishing out. Something like these from MTX. http://www.mtxhome.com/p/prosumer/tp2400.aspx -
Seems that series of MTXs are 4 omh, I'm thinking he's probably better off with something 8ohm, right?Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

The first thing I would add is a subwoofer (car box or whatever, hey he can use it in his car on the way to the party), an amp for the subwoofer and then cross over the main speakers so only midrange and highs are coming out of them.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
The Cerwin 15's work wonderful for this as do the MTX speakers. I've always been a fan of the MTX AAL 212 (2 12's, 6" mid and a horn tweater). Worked great throughout my college years and now are serving their purpose in the garage setup. Plenty of bump with either one.AVR: Pioneer Elite SC-67
