That's very interesting. I'm wondering if the PS3 is effected by this since it's a Sony product as well.

That really sucks! I received BDP-S70 for Christmas and I chose it because of the great reviews.

You need to use a really expensive HDMI cable for the best quality picture, everyone knows that. I bet the cable they used in the article was an el-cheapo.

Something like this would be a minimum starting point for a good picture.

I'm glad to say I haven't purchased a Sony product in a long time.

    Your jesting ?

Its a joke based on DV's posts in a thread started by Mantis about how a HDMI cable he purchased made his audio sound better....

Sorry guys but they rave about it last year and most sites reviews drolled over it and stated that the 570 and 770 were the standard to beat for mid level players.

One of the main reasons the Sony BDP-770 blu ray player is so good is because of the picture quality it can deliver.

They change the way they report/measure the levels and now it is shite! Okay.... I will go with my eyes on this one!

Interesting read all the same and thanks for the link. I am not putting down oppo and by the sounds of it they are really nice players. Maybe my next Blu-Ray will be an Oppo but for now I am content with my Sony BDP-S770! :)

This is why if I like the component I have I don't read reviews. Based on their previous visual tests they raved about the players. Interesting article but their conclusions won't affect my enjoyment when I play a DVD.
A few years they fussed about some chroma defect they found in the Denon 2800 DVD player but I owned one and couldn't see what the hell they were talking/testing about.

So... without a 16-18,000 dollar piece of equipment that they used could we visually see a difference?

I bought my dad the 570 to go along with an xbr lcd, and I have to say it was gorgeous. Maybe I just don't have the fine eye some folks do, but I was very pleased with the end result. And my parents were blown away, so that's all I care about in the end.

I have an oppo and I really like it but with that said, my previous Bluray was a sony BDP-S470 and I didn't find it lacking in color reproduction and picture quality. I expect that the oppo would outperform the Sony player in tests designed to check video processing capabilities but does this mean anything in the real world, or that people who own Sony players should run out and buy an oppo? Not a chance!!!!

    Just my 2 cents.

I think their point isn't that the 570 is a piece of crap now... It's that since it isn't outputting to the known standard, you have to calibrate your display around it, whereas with the Oppo you know that you're getting a proper calibration of your display. I mean, you always have to calibrate for your source... but at least with these benchmarks, they can tell you which sources adhere to the correct standards.
