Goodmorning guys,
If this story sounds familiar, well it is and it can't be helped. Ever since I got my 2-ch rig set up I found myself not buying or burning cds any more. Once I found the Greatful Dead site and then all the streaming radio stations I wanted a piece of this technology. I ran 2 -50' rca cables from rear of my Gateway to rear of my Yamaha rx-v665 into audio 1. At first I got music but also
came a gnd humm louder than the tunes. My first fix was to unplug HDMI out which did eleviate some of this hum but over time it came back and more than likely just a coincidence as a fix. I've heard, do to the lenght that it's more than likely a gnd hum from parallel wires.Guys I need another way of doing this, can you please help out. Btw rear of puter does not have optical
or HDMI.The only ports left are I believe a female f-connector, a red and white rca which did nothing and a female multi pin w/ an orange female single rca port. The way I originally ran this was to come out of the headphone jack
w/ a multi splitter into a y jack into the RCAs going to the avr.I took apart the jacks and splitter and it's nether of those devices. Can you please help?

The single orange RCA... Is it Digital Out? If so, try it.

Since you were using the headphone jack, how loud was the volume on the computer when you were playing it on the AVR?
I had a freind that had this same problem (but with a much smaller run of cord like 3 feet lol). We had his laptop hooked up to my Dad's old Yamaha. With the volume @ 99 on his computer we got lots of static and distortion through the speakers. We turned the volume to 1 on his laptop and used the volume on the Yamaha and we were golden.
Also if your going to use the headphone jack long term I suggest trying to find a single y splitter w/ RCA's that are long enough (which might be a slight PITA given your distance). The more connections you add the more signal degredation you can add.
So turn down the volume on the computer to like really really low and see if that fixes the problem..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -

You would need a powered ART Cleanbox Pro that will take RCA and convert it to XLR. You could get two of these (one for each end) and make the run with XLR and convert back to RCA at both ends. It's one way of doing it.
The RCA cables are long enough that they are acting like an antenna. It's entirely possible that it is not ground hum.
Two pack of 50' XLR's
You will obviously need 4 short RCA cables. -
Also a pic of the rear of the computer would help as would a link to the manual online."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963)

If the orange connector is a digital out you would have to set Windows to use that device in the sound configuration, assuming the drivers are on the PC for that device.AVR: Elite VSX-21TXH
Amplifier: B&K 7250 Series ii
Misc: Velodyne SMS-1
Mains: RTi-10
Center: CSi-5
Rear: Boston DSi460
Sub: SVS PC-Ultra
TV: Panasonic TC-P58V10
DVD: Panasonic DMP-BD60K -
Endershadow ,volume levels were actually normal and adjustable. The hum was just to loud and distracting. I can't help w/ the pix ,i have no camera and probably wouldn't know how to use it. I'm very bad w/ things like this.Btw I did try to get a schematic of the rear of the puter but couldn't find it. Thanks , I'm convinced it will work out there's just way to music out there to stream.....lw2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

guys, i have a new development. I messed w/ the computer volume settings and it really wasn't affected but then i removed the HDMI out from the avr and the tunes are a playing.I only use the HDMI out for on screen adjustments and rarely use it. This might be it.I don't think it was the cables or the splitter i was using. I only hope it holds and thanks to all for your ideas......lw2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Did you have the computer connected via HDMI as well as RCA to the AVR?"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963)

Endeshadow, the short answer is no.The computer and avr were totally seperate in deferent rooms. Over the many hours I've played both you -tube,internet radio and
the Deads' site and all is working w/o any interference whatso ever. I have absolutely no idea why removeing the HDMI out would rectify this but it seems it did.Go figure.....lw2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E
