Considering doing the amtrack Autotrain for polkfest. Anyone else from the northeast doing that? Just checking opinions to see if there is anything I am kidding about going this route. I am digging having my car there and avoiding the tsa hullabaloo for such a short trip

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've heard good and bad things about it but, like TireRack.com, you have to wade through the garbage to find the real valuable opinions. Unfortunately, like TireRack.com, 90% of the opinions/reviews are nothing more than adults acting like petulant children with unrealistic expectations. Some people seem to think the train should only take a couple of hours but it takes a good bit of time. Plan some extra travel days in there. Also, check fares and any extra fees that might be included. It might end up being more expensive than just driving. Then again, the train allows you to sit on your butt, take a nap, have a few beverages or whatever while someone else deals with the drive and any traffic that might ensue.

Wouldnt it be ideal for the person heading furthest north to pick up everyone between their house and flordia that is going and everyone split gas??? ;)

The drive from my house is silly long. No effing way I am driving the whole thing. Call me lazy

I figured the Autotrain would be nice as I could avoid car rental and long drive. Problem is round trip with a sleeping berth was 800 and change. Sleeping in a **** recliner for 17 hours? Eff thT noise

Already booked airfair. 320 round trip. Also have to take 2 less days off to account for train travel. Flying in Friday morning. Leaving Monday noonish. Gives a free day to hit a park if I choose Win!!!

Just gotta rent a car and I'm good to go.

Would anybody be interested in a ride down to Polkfest from NYC?

I'll be driving the Vette (mom is letting me use her car) so I can pick up one person...

Huh? I've been in long road trips in the C6 and the car is very comfortable.

At the speed I drive it may take longer, I usually go 5 under the speed limit.

If you're going to traverse the entire East Coast like that (let's face it, nothing north of NYC counts!) you're going to need a frickin' bus to pick up every freeloader along the way. Especially all those mooches in the Carolinas!

Yeah but how much is the car rental going to cost you?

Honestly, the train is not a bad solution at all. And $800 for a round trip, you gets to watch the scenery go by, you're not stuffed in to a high pressure pathogen incubation unit, nobody molests you before you get on (unless doro's around) and you get to take your own car with you instead of some crummy, funky, beat up rental car.

If I were going, I'd take the train.

    But you forget, grandma here:

    Drives a Corvette like it's a Yugo.

Now I spent 16 straight hours stopping only for gas and potty breaks in the Lightning and it was one of the best long-haulers I've ever driven, bested only by my Thunderbird. That car was made for the highways!

I usually try to hypermile whatever I drive to get the best gas mileage. At 50MPH (5 under the limit) I usually get 33.5MPG with the Vette. More if I don't use the air conditioning and in good weather.

Popular Mechanics drove a Corvette in 6th gear at 55MPH and it returned 32.8 miles per gallon:

If I drove that vette we'd be going 120 on the straights

Which pretty much guarantees you are not driving it.

I'd like to get there alive. Seriously.

I know you are joking, but... at that speed and if your MPG is accurate you would be burning 67 gal per hour. I would think you spent most of your time at the pump.

    No.

5.4L engine, 2.0L supercharger, 10 pounds of boost at an effective 7.4L of displacement. One fuel injector moves more fuel per hour than most family sedan fuel pumps.

25 gallon tank too. Accelerating at wide open throttle, the dual fuel pumps put out about 62 pounds of pressure. Ends up being in the 240 lph range of flow. I do believe that's for one pump. I have to check the numbers when I get home. It's something sick though. Stock fuel system will support 16 pounds of boost and 700 horsepower. That's a ton of flow.

I live almost 2 hours away from New York. Plenty of open roads down here plus:

    http://www.njmp.com/index.php

is a 20 minute drive and I know a couple guys on the B.o.D. for the track.

I know places in NJ I could get going that fast. It'll hit 120 in just over a mile. But I also know places up in western Michigan and Montana where there is miles of open, straight highway to really stretch the legs.
