ABC bites...Brothers and sisters cancelled.

Why?

Besides the season ending episode, it was a fantastic show. So many twists and turns, relationships and what not, it kept you glued to every episode. I just learned that ABC has cancelled this show and many others in a mass cancellation with no warning to the public.

Other shows cancelled; Off the Map, Detriot187, Mr. Sunshine, Better with you and No ordinary family.

The fate of "Detroit 187" and "No Ordinary Family" were known ahead of the official announcement. I believe "Mr. Sunshine" was one of those "on the bubble" shows.

My bad, Danny. I just re-read the original post and you are correct, I should have written it differently. My wife, her entire family and some friends are big fans of Brothers and Sisters and nobody really found out until after the last show of the season. I did read that some of the others had some sort of advance warning. I only watch 2 ABC shows. Grey's Anatomy and Brothers and Sisters.

The last episode was like they threw it together with no care at all, when normally the show had you rolling from laughter. No big bang, no goin' out in a blaze of glory, just a dud for an episode and then cancelled. We're not big fans of ABC right now...

Since when does "being a good show" have anything to do with a network show staying on the schedule? Ratings or bust, and it didn't have any.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Off The Map and V were fairly entertaining too. The profitability numbers to keep producing these shows just must not be there.

I won't miss Brothers and Sisters. Tried to get through one episode and didn't make it much past the first commercial break. Was not a fan.

I understand many folks didn't like it. Thing is, we happened to be in front of the boob tube when it came on for the very first episode. Seeing two guys kiss for the first time was unsettling but we got over it and came to absolutely love the show. If you knew what was going on, you were in stiches almost every episode. We looked forward to seeing it and we [my wife and I] always made sure we were together to watch it.

Thing that kills me is that Desperate Housewives is still running and that show has been has just flat out gotten stupid to us.

Brothers and Sisters did have a pretty good run of 5 seasons, with is better than most new shows get these days. Just about every show I've gotten into in the last few years (since the writers strike) has been cancelled after a very short run. It is on the verge of making me disenfranchised with network TV. Lets see: The Event, Chicago Code, Detroit 187, Southland (cancelled by NBC, luckily picked up by TNT), The Good Guys, The Cape, The Unusuals, The Dollhouse, Kings, Flash Forward, The Nine, Caprica, Jericho, and a few others that I'm not remembering right now.

The networks get cold feet so easily these days. They don't care about quality programming as much as profit. Reality shows are so cheap and the majority of the viewers would rather tune into some mindless crap than watch a well written drama. It is sad really. I can only think of three shows that I watch that have survived the last few years, Parenthood, Modern Family, and Chuck.

Agreed, Bill. Anybody ever seen the movie Idiocracy? I'd swear it's coming true, sooner than we think. This is a perfect example.

Haven't seen it. I'll look it up.

You know, I used to have at least 3 or 4 shows that I really looked forward to watching each week. After this season, there are NONE! I'm glad I don't pay $80 for satellite or cable any more. The few shows out there on cable that are getting critical acclaim, I am able to catch on Netflix and/or through other internet sources. Sports are the only thing that I really miss.

Tad dramatic. The networks are dying a slow death and their inability to make a quality TV show certainly contributes to that, but on cable there are a dozen shows that are smart and entertaining. Pretty much everything AMC puts out (Mad Men adn Breaking Bad are two of the best shows EVER MADE, let alone on right now), Justified and Sons of Anarchy on FX, stuff like that. There's a LOT of crap, dont' get me wrong, but the stuff that really is great (Brothers and Sisters was OK at best) is really just reaching new heights of awesome. You just have to be willing to pay for it, unfortunately, because making a good TV show isn't cheap, and networks aren't willing to take the risk.

Bill, you can't get it online that I know of and from what I understand it was only released in certain cities [part of the idiocracy]. That said, you can get it off Amazon. It's a stupid movie but it makes you think real hard at what the world is coming too.

The first scene of "the future" reminded me instantly of today.

Back to the topic. I'm down to the news and Grey's Anatomy for TV. If it weren't for my wife, I'd have 85 smackers a month more to spend on audio but we all realize.....if momma ain't happy? Ain't nobody happy, so I fork it out for my one show. *sigh*

The networks know how we use those DVRs, so they know which shows get watched. What the networks want is the "right demographics" watching their show. I'll give you a good example from this past Sunday nite....

Tom Selleck had one of his Jesse Stone TV movies on CBS. Selleck was, as usual, excellent and the movie was great. Based on total number of viewers, it was easily the most watched TV program for the entire evening....even when up against the Billboard Music Awards. In fact, Selleck's TV movie more than double the viewers of the Billboard Music Awards'. However, because older viewers were the ones attracted to Selleck's movie, the networks don't consider them valuable. Selleck's TV movie ended up as one of the lowest rated TV program on Sunday (even though it had the most viewers).

Now look at "Brothers and Sisters", I'd think the typical viewer would also be a little older, and therefore, less valuable to ABC. The networks don't care about quality, otherwise we wouldn't have so much "reality TV". It's all about the dollars coming in from advertisers.
