Please help me understand. I just purchased a Wright WLA 12a pre-amp from the respected George Daniels. It should be on its way to its new home. However, this is my question.....I have a DAC that uses 6922 tubes and the Wright pre- uses 6sn7 tubes. If I connect this Dac (6922)to that pre- (6sn7)will it distort the SQ or can these pieces exist in the same chain?

There is no compatibilty issue with the different tube types, but you may or may not prefer the sound of both in the chain. I'd try them together and then seperately for an extended period of time to see which sound you prefer.

There are not rules about how many tube pieces you can have in the chain. Just like anything else it's all about the synergy of the parts coming together. As a very general rule of thumb at some point you can have too many tubes in the mix and it can affect the sound in a negative way.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Thanks H9! My question may sound stupid to some, but I thought i'd b better to ask than to do somethin stupid. You always give out good information. Thanks

I believe George's approach is a smart way to ease into it without really starting to overdo it all. I've seen a couple people on here historically just go tube crazy for absolutely no reason except they thought that if a tube sounds good in one place, it must be needed everywhere. It's embarassing but when you have the 0% APR or less actual audio experience, you do odd things at times...then again, to each his own.

Take your time, relax, enjoy and just listen. The rest will fall in place if you keep sitting instead of walking around looking for nulls, the ceiling and the UPS guy.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks George,,sounds like a sensible approach. I'm sure I'll have questions later. I'll be sure to contact you when I do.
