Hi,
I've got some vintage Polks I picked up cheap on CL the other day. They sound great but I'm not sure what model they are. They look like Monitor 11 or 10b, but the passive radiator is different, and is closer to the 6.5" drivers. Also, it's got a small (3") base on the bottom. It's got a fuse on the back and serial number says 11 0884...

Thanks in advance!

Thanks fastz28!! I'm curious, how do these rate in the vintage polk world. When I was younger we had some SDA-2s, and I've always loved the vintage Polk sound. I've got a PS Audio 200cx as well, but has a bad channel. I've heard great things about it, but haven't had been able to use it with good speakers. I've also got an old Counterpoint Electronics sa12 and superphon preamp in storage. Any suggestions?
    thanks, bill

Never heard that model but they've got Peerless tweeters going for them, IMO that is a good start! Welcome and please, try not to irritate the old timers.....they get a little grouchy with newcomers!

thanks for the advice gdb :) I shall try... Would buying Bose from Best Buy irritate the old timers? ;)

    To George Daniel
The other box has a different tweeter, and it does sound a little different. I noticed it before taking the grills off and looking. I've got to try and find a replacement, any suggestions?

Here's a pic of the front and back of one of the tweeters. The other is an SL-2000. The SL-2000 looks like the one that was replaced because the screws don't quite line up...

gdb, does it help that I'm 40? Besides, I'm divorced, so I excel at apologizing! And, apparently, irritating people :)

If those are black domed (without a hole in the center) and if one of the connectors is tinted red, then I think that makes them the new SL-2000 aka RD0194 tweeters. Those are the currently available replacement sold by Polk, and are considered a recommended upgrade from the original tweeters.

Yes, they are black with no hole. I guess that both have been replaced, because the other one has wood screws and the holes don't line up. It says SL-2000 on it and Polk Audio on the front. Should I just go through Polk, or a company like Madisound?
    Thanks, Bill

Do not buy anything yet. Please post pics of the other speaker front and back. Sl2000 never used a fuse for protection. Has anyone else seen a black Monitor 11? Full shots of the speakers will get you some more info.

Thanks Jim, I'll post some more pics when I get home. The previous owner re-finished them in black. Based on the screw holes, and wiring/soldering job for the tweeters, I'd say both have been replaced. Replacing both is an option. The difference between the 2 is subtle, but it drives me crazy!!!! The cab with the SL-2000 is seems to be a touch less loud, across the spectrum. I'm wondering if a slightly different impedence in the tweeters could do that. My first guess, is cables/connectors though.

Thanks for all the help, you guys are great!

I suspect that the Peerless is original and that the silverdome was an incorrect replacement attempt. I thought there was a Monitor 12 and not an 11, maybe a **** transitional designation? Are the openings the same dimensions? BTW bstrey, I welcome everyone, the founding fathers..... Anyway, try not to mention cables and you'll be fine!:biggrin:

    Amen and Amen!

Gotta love em' though. I just hope the old timers are actually old timers and not some 19 year old punk kids
