Confused...

So here's my basic problem. I had bought a pre-packaged surround sound system from GPX (gasp!) a long time ago when I could not afford anything better. The way their system was set up, you ran the 5.1 audio cables from the dvd player to the sub and the speaker wire from the sub to each speaker. Well, unfortunately the DVD player died on me not all that long ago. So now i've picked up some R15's for surround speakers and plan on slowing building a real system. The problem I have is that in the meantime I would like to continue using the GPX sub. The only inputs on the back of the sub are a standard aux input and the 5.1 input. I've tried running from my receiver's subwoofer pre-out straight into the subwoofer connection of the 5.1 cables but alas that did not work for me. Is there any way I can salvage this sub for a while without spending a lot of money. I would appreciate any input you guys (and gals) could give me. Thanks.

It reads like your GPX sub did it all, and now you have an AVR???
Can you post pictures?More later,

That's pretty much the long and short of it. Now I have an AVR and the sub did most of the work before. I just want some bass from the sub is all. Unfortunately I can't post any pics.

this GPX system sounds like the way you would hook up a typical computer speaker system with a sub. you plug the sub into the wall outlet then you hook the sat speakers to the powered sub. so they run off the sub's amp it appears.
Sorry I don't have the answer... i'm just trying to clear some things up.. i hope so anyway.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Agree, db...
Only thing that comes to mind to try is connecting the AVR's sub-out to the GPX's Aux input.More later,

Does the receiver have a 5.1 (6.1, whatever) set out OUTPUTS?? Or, have you replaced the DVD player?? If you bought a new DVD player that had separate 5.1 outputs then I'd think you could run the 5 outputs to the receiver, and the .1 output to the GPX sub. You'd then be mixing the amps - 5 in the HTR and 1 on the sub box, but I think that would get you the proper signal to the sub box. I doubt the GPX amp will keep up very well or very cleanly.. who knows.. so you may be limited on overall volume of the system... and in fact.. volume could be a problem because I think you'd have to constantly adjust the GPX volume to match whatever you were at on the HTR. Also concerns on crossover frequencies and where you're decoding and all that.... But I think, even if something like mixing the 6 outputs would work, the volume thing will be a major pain.
In your plans for a system, why not plan on building a new sub, and for now just buy the plate amp? About $120 or so at Parts Express. You can break into the GPX box in order to wire the new amp to the driver, and feed the plate amp off the sub-out on the HTR.
Edit: "Only thing that comes to mind to try is connecting the AVR's sub-out to the GPX's Aux input."
Problem here could be that the subout signal is controlled by the HTRs volume control, and I think the Aux in would assume a constant line-level input, with volume to be controlled by the GPX "preamp".
