Where is Mr. Candy when you need him. He could throw a meter or something on those bad boys and tell you why they sound different. With 5 speakers to test he could generate enough charts and graphs that the paperwork would stretch from sea to shining sea. LOL  No offense intended. Just having a little fun.
Seriously, in this case, measurements are the obvious thing to do. T/S on the woofers, and impedance sweeps on the crossovers. You guys like to poo-poo measurements, but in an hour or two all issues would become apparent.

Who the heck are you guys??? I just see other members trying to help, What are you? a tool bag?
Not an Audiophile, just a dude who loves music, and decent gear to hear it with.

I made some progress today. I opened up all of the speakers and found that the placement of damping material varied greatly, so I made some mental notes with regard to how the position affects the sound, but moved the batting in each speaker to be more consistent with the ones that sounded good.

I also found that in the speakers that sounded off, the polarity of the tweeters and/or woofers were incorrect. Additionally, the one set that someone had "upgraded" seemed to have a complete disregard for the original crossover design and moved components around for no discernable reason. There were also loose solder balls and bits of wire, and some spots where they crossover may have been shorting. This was also the set that was packed to the top with fiberglass.

Even when the polarity of the woofers and tweeters were corrected, they still sounded wrong, so I removed the crossovers and put in an old stock set that I had ordered. Now, at least my first reaction is that this set of speakers sounds normal again. At some point I'll have to take apart the other crossover and see if I can put it back to stock specifications with the upgraded components.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to set up all five sets of speakers for another side by side comparison, but hope to do that soon. I'm crossing my fingers that they will all sound compatible now.

    Cheers
