local cl has two ads, here is the first,
Soundcraftsmen propower ten, not the best appearance, chips of paint off the front and top,and the rubber feet are collapsing due to age, claims to be the original owner, and paint problems are from having second soundcraftsmen on top. 395.00
next deal, (2) adcom gfa 5400s, one adcom gcd700 cd player, and one adcom gtp4500 tuner preamp.
These are like new in appearance, with remotes. 500.00
Have yet to actually speak with sellers, just emails, of course will try to strike a better price, and will try to offer trade of denon avr3300 in pristine cond. and 2 marantz ma500u monos again in pristine cond.
let me know, you guys, have read online, the soundcraftsmen has been praised, here on cp from a thread from several years ago, as the closest ss to tube sound, but its in rough shape
We know adcom is good quality for the price, and it is in great cond.
And both these sets are old,is either known for markedly better longevity?

I don't know anything about the Soundcraftsman but stacking power amps never seemed like a good idea to me.
The Adcom 5400s are good amps. I don't know about the Adcom CD player or the 450 preamp. Just considering the two 5400s alone $500 would be a decent but I'd start with an offer of $400.
Those that think Adcom should have been aborted will be along soon:biggrin:TO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE. -
Adcom all day, every day in the above senario.

I have never heard or owned adcom or soundcraftsmen, in fact the only separate amps i have ever owned are the marantz monoblocks i mentioned earlier.
After hearing occasional opinions that the marantz amps are not really designed like true 2 channel separates, more to be used in home theater setups.
Are the adcoms going to be a significantly different experience than what i have with marantz monos and denon 3300 preouts or my little cheapo audiosource pre.
If not, i would probably hang onto my money and avoid about a 5 hour round trip.
thanks for any input.humpty dumpty was pushed -

Yes, but they are not mono blocks nor can they be bridged, so if you don't have a use for the 2nd Adcom you could sell it.
The pre-amp is the weak link in the set-up. 5 hours round trip??? maybe, maybe not. If you can sell the 2nd Adcom for, say $250.........it's worth the trip.
The 5400 should be a better sounding piece than those particular Marantz's.

Talked to the seller, will be going to look in the next couple days.
Will combine trip to make my famous salmon pattys, butterless mashed potatos and homemade coconut cake for my mom who lives in atlanta, to make up for having to miss mothers day.
Also trying to set up a meet with jerryj12 to swap our gear back we loaned each other.
thanks for input guys.humpty dumpty was pushed -
There are a number of members here who are presently looking for a 3 or 5 channel amp. You'd probably get a sale if you picked both up and put one on the Flea Market, as Brock suggested!

Started out my audio journey when my mom bought a little silvertone (i think)
stereo with pressboard sides and bottoms.
Thank god it came with headphones, nothing has ever sounded better than lying in bed in east point ga, late 60s, early 70s, rare earth or grand funk, steppenwolf or tommy roe from wqxi am, then 96 rock fm.
tomorrow, i travel 2 to 2.5 hours one way, not only to take my elderly sick mom her belated mothers day coconut cake i am about to bake, but meet gary from mcdonough for a rack full of adcom separates, my first real 2 channel setup.
Not the end, certainly not the pinnacle, but looking forward to this new diversion while ignoring , as we all do, that i am just waiting on the day I die.humpty dumpty was pushed -
Im now going to listen to "He stopped loving her today" to cheer up.humpty dumpty was pushed

got the adcom gear sounded awful on dcm 400s,much better on kefs.
the dcms are remarkable on direct tv, have yet to hook up my pitiable turntable.
The gear is now outside on the porch, tops off airing out, its remarkable how fully a smokers gear can foul a whole room overnight, have dealt with this befor, so i know it can be overcome.
Two questions, although the guts of the gear are not caked with the yellow tar i found on a receiver from a smoker, I would like to use a spray to clean and in the process help to deodorize, any suggestions, which omes and where you can get them?
Also, he is wanting to sell the infinity kappas and crescendos, he is asking 250 for crescendos, which im not paying of course, considering the 35 to 40 bucks for surround replacements, what would be a fair price, if i should fool with them at all.
Will eventually be selling denon avr 3300, and at least some of 5 marantz ma 500 monos, once this gear is time tested.
sorry for the long post, but pretty excited about first real baby steps into separates.humpty dumpty was pushed
