Anyone here have experience with the Thiel CS2?

http://wausau.craigslist.org/ele/2384317187.html

some popped up in my area for 150.00 bucks and if they are good I can run over and try and grab them.

Never heard Thiel's outside of being at a store and very limited experience with them.

    What he said.

Ruthlessly flat and coherent. It takes awhile to get used to them, because of that.

My brother has a set like these, i think they need an external equalizer to work right... A lot of the used speakers don't have them cause they tended to fail and the speakers sound liek crap without it... you can find the thiel equalizers ocassionally on ebay.

The EQ is for it's big brother the CS3.5 only.
A working pair of CS2's for a buck fifty is a no brainer.

Ruthless is a good way to describe the characteristic Thiel sound, all righty.

Atleast thats how they sound to the Fullrange guys when they are exposed to that extra top octave.:wink:

Actually later generations lean even more to the analytical side.

Some are more aggressive than others, fo sho; and I am not, in full disclosure, an expert on all of the Thiel models throughout their long history (ironically enough, I was more of a Polk Audio fan, back in the day).

EDIT: all that being said, I'd definitely recommend a listen before plunking down cold, hard, filthy lucre.

The price looks good, and btw, that ads pic make me think this is a dealer of old things selling them. In other words, deal with him after a listen, put 6 $20's in your right pocket and a $20 and a $10 in the left. If you like the sound offer the $120, wave it under his nose hehe! That would be a steal!!

Well the guy is about 45 mins away from where I live and I'm stuck at work for another hour or two and he sent me an email that another guy was coming to look at them tonight and was also highly interested.

Hopefully he doesn't take them but if he does then he does. I wanted to meet yesterday but didn't work for him I guess :frown:

well I haven't gotten them yet as I'm limited for time and so is he. With being over 45 mins away and telling me that I have to be there before 6 and I get done with work at 5 (then rush hour out of our little city) today is a no go. I'm not going to lose my job over speakers....

so just got them home and hooked up. Played some Dire and some other things I'm familiar with. They imaged very very well, and are very netural. However do lack in bass compared to the Amazings but that is an easy given. I like them.

Also it was cool as the guy also has a set of Vandys, MMGs, Carver Amazing III, some yahama that uses some beryllium drivers, a crap ton of old receivers, and some tube stuff. He told me I'll be the first on his list if he has to sell more as his wife told him he had to get rid of stuff.

They are in good condition for being so old. One of the dust caps fell off and someone glued it back on (terribly), and some dings here and there, nothing major. There are some dents in the tweeters but work like normal.

SO now that I bought them, what the heck do these normally go for used?

Also do they favor SS or tubes, as I would be tempted to make a tube system with them, nothing uber expensive but something nice.

They appear to be a pretty benign impedance curve, any tube amp capable of a 6ohm load will be fine.

Theils do image well, they will attribute much of that to their use of a phase accurate(minium phase change) 1st order crossover. As for the bass response that Vifa P21 will reach into the low 40's.

On the woofer or midrange? If the midrange a wonky dust cap may cause some anomalies at the upper end of its operating range. On the woofer it might be prone to vibration if not bonded to the cone properly.

    No rips in the dome?

In pristine shape about $50.:biggrin: J/k I think you did fine.

the woofer and the cap is glued very tightly back on, only thing was that it just looks very bad as there is a lot of extra glue around the outside that just looks terrible but sounds fine.

The tweeters have no holes or rips. Just a few little dents but sound just fine.

Honestly I like them. They are different than the Amazings which I like and don't think they'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

Cool as long as it is not loose it should have no audible effect. And to clarify it's a SEAS P21 not Vifa. The midrange is sourced from Vifa.

Those tweets are the venerable Dynaudio D28AF's which were considered one of if not the best dome tweeter available at that time .
