Morning guys,
I own a Yamaha RX-V665 avr w/ the abllity to h/u up 9.1 surround using various speakers and settings. I do not, I only go w/ the usuall 5.1 set up and always wondered if I was losing any quality by not jumping out w/ resisters the rear surround as Yamaha calls it.I've already explained on a privious post that I already have lost a little quality by using an optical toslink to suit my viewing habits, that I can undrestand but there is no 5.1 setting on the avr it is only 2-ch or multiple versions of 7.1.So does one jump out the set of speakers not being used or do I stay the course as I am doing now. Thanks, I hope I explained myself enough..

With the Optical connection, your system currently only supports 5.1. The receiver itself may push the sound out of more speakers, but it will not act as a true channel. Think of your current setup. Watching TV, not everything is 5.1 - but sometimes you randomly hear faint noises from the back speakers. The receiver can "mimic" the rear channels in a pinch.
I would expect that the back rears, or wide front, or whatever variation would either not turn on at all, or would just play background noises. You would not physically benefit from adding the extra channels since no format would be supported. Also, since surrounds are not played at full volume - you will also not benefit from any wider "soundstage" if you want to call it that. The only real gain would be from using some kind of multiplexed stereo (2 channel) mode that would play through all speakers.65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)
