I recently purchased the RTi 100s and am new to this forum. I was suprised to see that everybody here definitely prefers the RTi70s to the 100s and was wondering if they are really that much better. If the RTi100s were cheaper then the 70s would they be the better speaker?

Welcome to the forum:). If you're not planning to get a subwoofer, I'd say the RTi100 is a better speaker. You'll lose some mids but the RTi100 will play deeper and having the built in subs in a stereo set up sounds fantastic.

Welcome to the forum and don't get all concerned about what other peoples opinion of speakers are. Its all about you and your own enjoyment. I purchased 800i a couple years back which is very similar to the 70 because I did not like the idea of plugging my speaker into an outlet. Just personal preference I guess.

It should make for some interesting talk when you start asking if you can bi-wire those 100's:D

I prefer the RTi70 over the RTi100. Regardless of price, the RTi70 is a better performer, IMO.

    Welcome to the forum.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I appreciate everyones help on this matter and I will definitely consider trading in my 100s for 70s back at circuitcity if I am not satisfied with the 100s.

But in the meantime I also have the little psw250 to go along with the 100s. Any ideas on how I should set everything up. Plus also as someone mentioned earlier, can I bi-wire the 100s?

enjoy your 100's. and welcome to the forum. I have used both the 100's and the 70's both are good but slightly different sounding speakers. both work good for home theater and 2 channel music.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Second of all, dude, the 70 is the greatest speaker of all time ever made by anybody, much less Polk! I've recently went a few rounds with a few individuals over this very subject until they all made me see the light and realize the error of my ways.

Seriously though, everyone says that the 70 plus an SVS will outperform the 100s by themselves. Well, they'd damned well better, considering the difference in price. The 70 and the 100 are pretty much about the same price now, so when you factor in the added cost of the SVS (or any other quality stand alone sub), that's a big difference in price. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I think that a lot of people seem to be forgetting the fact that you can also put an SVS with a 100 just as easily as you can a 70. There's no law that says you HAVE to only use the 100's built in subs. I think it's safe to say that Polk never intended for the 100's subs to be the only subs in a home theater system, but rather as complimentary subs instead. I support this with the fact that if you will just check out the "system builder" on Polk's website, it will recomend a sub in addition to the 100. I will agree that the subs built into the 100 are not really strong enough for movies, but are more than adequate for music. For music, I personally prefer not to use a seperate self powered dedicated sub. I borrowed the following from Hometheatermag.com:
"Def Tech unleashed the idea of a powered subwoofer built into a tower speaker with the BP2000. Reviewers and consumers ate up the idea like a hot bratwurst late in the fourth inning. It's definitely convenient. There's no need to find room and run wiring for an extra subwoofer box in your listening room. That alone might have made the idea a bestseller, but, according to Def Tech, the idea really originated as a way to make the speaker sound better. Dual subwoofers (one in the left speaker and one in the right speaker) can provide more-linear bass reproduction throughout the room than a single one can. Since the sub is right there near the tweeter and midbass drivers, there are fewer potential timing or phasing problems. And, since Def Tech knows which subwoofer is going to be used with the mid and upper portions of the main speaker, they can optimize the entire system to take advantage of what each part.".

There really isn't all THAT much difference between them. The 70 will have SLIGHTLY better midrange dynamics, and the 100 will have SLIGHTLY better bass performance. There will most definitely NOT be any kind of huge, big, dramatic, mind bending, orgasmic, earth shaking, jaw dropping, unbelievable, drastic, night and day difference between either of them that is almost like a religious experience where you will actually see GOD (contrary to what some on this board will try to lead you to believe).

All I can say is don't be a sheep and blindly follow what some others are saying. Just because some people (including a 15 year old kid) say that one is better than the other doesn't neccesarily make it so. My advice is to audition them both against each other, both with and without a seperate sub, and decide which YOU actually liike better. About a year and a half ago. I compared the 800 vs. the 1000 (the immediate predasussers to the 70/100) one on one, speaker to speaker (not the 800 PLUS an SVS against the 1000 by itself), and I personally liiked the 1000 better. You may or may not feel the same, but you do owe it to yourself to find out first hand.
