mounting floor speakers

I would love some thoughts on this please. After 6 years i have decided to upgrde my ht from the puny satellites I have. I have a denon 789, cs10, and monitor 30's at the front, along with crappy satellites as surrounds. I wanna move the 30's to the surround and get some serious sound for the front. I'm looking at the tsi400 an monitor 60 or 70. The problem is the bottom of my TV sits 64" off the ground and the center of my cs10 is exactly 5' off the ground. With it that high I'm worried about the floor speakers not being tall enough to sound good. The 60's are 37 1/2 inches tall and the tweeter is about 30" so there will be a 30" difference in height from The tweeters on my floor and center speakers. The 70's will be about a 25" difference. sooo I was thinking of putting a shelf on my wall and sitting the 60's or 400's on shelf but it would be against the wall. Now my question is would that sound bad with the 400's even though its a down ported speaker and not rear?

The 60 are front ported which should make it no problem doing that. ill get them if I need to which means ill send my cs10 back an pick up a cs2 for a few dollars more. I was thinking about getting four tsi200 and mounting them on the wall as my fronts (if possible) but theyre rear firing and would likely sound worse. So what do u think? Cs10,with tsi400 up against the wall. Or cs2 with monitor 60 or 70 up against the wall? Also how much difference can i have and them sound good? I just want the best sound out of these speakers. All replies are appreciated. Thanks

How much do you want to raise them? Could use a plinth.

Just angle your center channel down towards your listening position with a door stop or wedge.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If it wasn't for the likely WAF, you could use these:
    http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Materials-Concrete-Cement-Masonry-Concrete-Blocks-Bricks-Lintels/h_d1/N-5yc1vZboge/R-202535903/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

That's actually what I used for awhile to raise my R50's tweeters to ear level since they were too low for a typical chair. Now I just use the R50's as fancy stands for my LSi7's. Actually, the R50's work perfect for stands in this case, and the LSi7's tweeters are at just the right level.

    Great cost effective suggestion BJ.

If that's too high, you could try a 14x14 concrete paver....just spray paint it black ro whatever. You can even spike it. Either way, I'd make sure you seal the concrete up with a spray or otherwise to keep flakes, chips and chunks from falling off during every move or adjustment.

He may have to use a combo of both suggestions, the concrete paver, and angle the center down with a wedge. That center is pretty high up there.

Or use one plinth, put the center infront of the tv and angle up. I'd hit up the 70's and cs2 btw.

Im sorry, I wasn't too clear. i Was just wondering how the speakers will sound butted against the wall, especially the down firing tsi400. do thEy get boomy tht close? I like the Tsi line but do you think it would be better to get the front ported monitor 70 with a cs2 or the smaller but upgraded bottom ported tsi400 with a cs10? Actually,I think I just made up my mind typing this. I'm gonna go with he 70's since its more speaker for the money and I can put it right up against the wall. Weird how That works sometimes.

Btw, I do have the center angled down. I bought some round sticky felt pads for couch feet and stuck three together and pit them on back rift and left corners. Think the mains will be ok straghit up and down if I lift them a foot off the ground or do I need to see about angling them too? My good friend runs a cabinet shop so I can build anything pretty much.

A foot up is pretty high, if you have your buddy build you something, make sure it's solid and can support the weight. Wouldn't that throw the tweeter too high for your listening possition ?

You should adjust everything around where your ears are at when listening, not by how high the center is. You may be overthinking this and making things worse by lifting up the speaks that high.

I would first try it out as is, the center won't be an issue for 2 channel listening anyway. Movies, the vocals are out the center alone and you can play with the angle of tilt.

Pictures of the set-up would definitely help suggestions. Also, will this be primarily for HT? Floor standing speakers aren't necessarily better than quality bookshelfs and a subwoofer for home theater. Smaller speakers will allow much easier placement (not right up against the wall, angled toward your primary listening position) and for savings moving down in size, you might be able to move to another line in quality. Just a thought...

I put my two channel PSB Synchrony One towers (44" H) on the 4" rosewood plinths, and it made a big improvement in clarity and focus of the sound. The plinths are using carpet piercing brass footers.

i can take some pics when i get home, but it will be mainly for ht. i have a custom built cabinet mounted on my wall under my tv, it holds my electronics on top and all my movies and power strip inside it. so to change height of center channel id have to unscrew the whole cabinet and move it down ( i have about 6" of wiggle room before i have to make new holes for my wires). i put my tv that high because i have reclining couches and it is a good height for me to recline and still have it pretty straight in front of me. i guess i need to find out how much space is too much between my main tweeters and my center tweeters and raise em till theyre just inside the maximum distance. also, my tv hangs on a long empty wall except for my tv and cabinet, so if i put bookshelf speakers they would have to hang off the wall, or i can make shelfs but a 20" deep shelf would look wierd hanging off my wall. let me take some pics when i get home, i might have to change up my cabinet to get the most out of it. maybe i can drop it 6 inches and put my mains on a 4" plinth and my center would only be 15" higher than my front l/r.

so being that im mostly using them for ht, should i go with the 60's or 50's instead of 70's? seems like everyone who has 70's uses them mainly for music listening

Sorry for taking your Time but I decided to do some mods to my cabinet and I'm gonna move it down four to six inches and put my speaker on a 4" plinth so it will put my center and front tweeters at a 20" height difference. I'm also gonna wait till Christmas or until I save up some money to get the fronts. I'm not sure if they will still sell the monitors on the eBay or newegg Polk stores, so I'm gonna go tsi400 just to make sure I'm current. I'm gonna keep the cs10 for now. Maybe upgrade to a cs20 later. sorry again for being wishy washy and confusing, but its too early for this thread. Thanks
