That's pretty cool...I'm sure mhardy knows about this already though?
I didn't realize that RS sold so many well-known brands back then. AR, KLH, THORENS, MARANTZ, Altec Lansing, etc. What happened?
I did have a transistor radio very much like that one on the front page!
cnhCurrently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!
Polk Lsi-7s, Def Tech 8" sub, HK 3490, HK HD 990 (CDP/DAC), AKG Q701s

Cool, how might I access cats. from the late 70's-early 80's?
-
Doh,OK found it.

Nowadays yer pretty much "SOL" if you want something besides a TV, cell phone, home security system etc. from RS! Oh yeah, I forgot their crappy alkaline batteries!
 -
I loved looking through those when they came out. I even loved to receive thier sale cat. more. Yea, I spent money with them. I bought a 10" 3-way with a ribbon tweeter. They were nice until I heard the ESS AMT 1D. Then I knew what I had to spend to get Better Sound.:frown::biggrin:Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

That's a neat link and I passed it onto my older friends.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I used to love looking through their catalogs as a kid.

Very cool, something to keep in mind, if you were making about $6000 a year back then you were doing good. Now look at those prices relative to 6K a year, the stuff was expensive, just like the good stuff is now.2-Channel System
Analog: VPI Traveler TT, Audio Technica 150MLX, Pro-Ject Tube Box DS
CD Player: Jolida JD-100 Preamp: Cambridge 840E Amp: Odyssey Kismet Stereo
Spkrs: Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature Systems -
Very Nice! Thanks for the link.
This is like finding a gold mine for a Vintage junkie.
They have nearly all catalogs from 1939-2005.
Just go to the main page at

yup, long since - it was pointed out on AK quite some time ago; the site owner actually contacted R/S and they were quite willing to let him do it. It is a tremendous resource.
FWIW, I have a fair collection of their paper catalogs - I mostly focus on the old (pre Tandy-merger) Allied Radio Corp, though (they generally had more interesting stuff).
Thanks to the last local vintage radio fleamarket, I have paper copies of the 1949 and 1951 R/S catalogs sitting on the coffee table in our family room even now :-) -
What a great post. Thanks for the links. I love the old vintage catalogs. Old JC Whitney catalogs were fun too.

SAME ! I would pour over it and also the Lafayette catalog (I used to have that crappy little Lafayette tuner)...thought it was so cool that it said $1 on the cover, but I got it free at the store ..*************************

I did too, I even remember the smell of it. Early 60's transistors had a very distinct aroma heating up, the good 'ol days :cool:Thorens TD125MKII, SME3009,Shure V15/ Teac V-8000S, Denon DN-790R cass, Teac 3340 RtR decks, Onix CD2...Sumo Electra Plus pre>SAE A1001 amp>Martin Logan Summit's -

... a few from the collection (of which I happen to have scans handy) :-) -
I still have the SA 2000 int. amp,TM 1000 tuner, optimus 5B speakers, SCT 5C cassete deck, all from 1977-78. Everything works except the cassete player/recorder.

Actually, the best of the bunch, as far as I am concerned are the Allied Radio Corp Catalogs. Interestingly, Tandy briefly merged Allied's consumer business with their own Radio Shack, and the thick 1971 "Allied Radio Shack" catalog is a real trip, since it contains basically the full product offerings of both legacy companies! The merger apparently fell victim to anti-trust regulations.
A teeny bit of info on the ARS merger at:

wow Growing up i used to always look through the radio shack and Heathkit catalogs. I had several receivers from radio shack. They would go on sale for 1/2 price when they closed out the models and would have a where is as is sale. Some of their stuff was made from foster ( like the 2100 or 2100D as well as some of the smaller ones) or pioneer and as much as I hate to admit it, some of the receivers sounded darn good and could hold their own against some of the marantz, pioneer, sansui, and kenwoods of the time. JC penny was another one that had a few receivers that sounded darn good ( as well as looked cool.)
I personally love the classic looks of a lot of the old receivers especially the one with a lot of vu meeters!!! What can I say, I am a sucker for vu meeter's.
My 1st new receiver was a Realistic sta820 and i put it up against my friends Marantz 1060 int. amp and even as kids all of my friends would pick the 820 over the 1060. What was the speakers we used back then? Jensen LS6 lol.
Anyway thank you for the links and bringing back the memories!!Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's.
